So you know what a doula is now (see previous post if not). But you might still be wondering why hiring one could be a good choice. What could we possibly bring to the table that your partner, family member or midwife couldn’t? The short answer is loads, but I’ll elaborate a bit for you!

The reality is that birth givers have a lot to do, and in order to do it all they need top class support. A midwife knows their stuff, but they don’t know you? And your partner might know you like the back of their hand, but do they know pregnancy and birth? And what do you do when they need a rest, the toilet, to eat/sleep/scream? You hire a doula that’s what!

We are there continuously - throughout pregnancy right through labour and birth and possibly into the postpartum period, so we get to know you. What your goals are. What a positive outcome for you and your birth is and then we provide types and levels of support that a midwife can’t in order to help you achieve this.

Doulas help you get the birth you want and deserve. That’s our only job. And that’s why you should hire one!

When I first told people I was going to train to be a doula I got asked this a lot. What is a doula? What does a doula do?

A doula is a birthing persons’ companion. We are there to gently guide and inform should that be required, as well as advocate for and empower a birth giver in order for them to have the best pregnancy and birth possible for them. We are a non medical addition to a birthing persons’ support team, operating outside of the NHS, which enables us to cater precisely to each individual’s needs. We have no agency in any birth; the decisions are solely the birthing person’s to make. We are there to encourage and uplift. We do not replace any other birthing partner; we are a support for them also. A good doula should also make it their work to create and maintain safe and inclusive spaces so that all birth givers feel supported and cherished.

We will be there during pregnancy and birth, and postpartum in some cases (helping the transition into new family life be as smooth, peaceful and stress free as possible) to help birth givers and their possible partners feel cared for and cherished during what can be the most vulnerable, beautiful, scary and amazing time of their life.
