My thoughts on breastfeeding 🤱🏻 💭

I have been breastfeeding for 6 months now, which I am very proud of. Not to say it’s been an easy road! Here are some of the things I have discovered:

1) A baby’s latch can make a huge impact to the breast feeding journey. H had a tongue tie when was born, which affected his latch and made it VERY painful for me. I honestly didn’t think I would continue for long. Fortunately we had access to a breastfeeding midwife and service to release his tongue tie, which has made a world of difference!

2) I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I do. Yes it is restricting and I can’t go out for long unless I pump beforehand but the bond I feel when feeding is something else 💖

3) I am hungry all the time! We may save money not using formula but I have probably spent it on extra food 🙈 breastfeeding burns ~500cal a day. A good excuse if any for more chocolate…

4) All my clothes are comfy and easy access. I don’t really buy ‘nice’ clothes if they impractical for feeding.

5) The best part is watching H grow and thrive knowing he’s getting all he needs 🥰 we have started the weaning journey which is exciting and a bit scary!

This January, consider who you are getting your nutrition advice from “Having thousands, if not millions of followers on social media is not a reflection on knowledge or expertise, especially where nutrition is concerned.”

Dietitians ask the public to seriously question who they are getting their dietary advice from this January, to avoid potentially dangerous diets that have medical implications and may lead to disordered eating.

Eating for mental health 🧠

The gut brain axis means what happens in the digestive system affects the brain and vice versa!

Some foods such as: fruit, veg, whole grains, oily fish, nuts, olive oil, vit D and probiotic supplements positively improve mental health. 👍🏻

Foods that are highly processed foods (think hot dogs, sugary drinks, pre prepared frozen foods) and high sugar/fatty foods have been shown to affect mental health negatively. 👎🏻
