Last weekend I delivered Scotland's Mental Health First Aid to a mixed group in Lossiemouth, kindly organised by The Lossie 2-3 group. Among the participants were members of Lossiemouth Men's Shed, and that got me thinking about why mental health is such a hidden issue among older men, and how do we make it okay for older men in Moray, and elsewhere, to talk about their mental health?
Today we're published an article on our website which delves into the stigma that surrounds mental health among older men and the importance of creating a safe, open environment to encourage discussions.
Here are some key takeaways from our post:
✅ The importance of speaking out: The first step towards change is acknowledging there's a problem to begin with. Let's end the silence on men's mental health.
✅ Finding community through Men's Sheds: A brilliant initiative providing men with a safe and supportive environment to engage in practical activities and socialise.
✅ Encouraging open conversations: Mental health isn't a topic to shy away from. Let's encourage more open conversations among our friends, families, and communities.
✅ Prioritising self-care: Remember, it's okay to take time for yourself and do the things you love.
✅ Seeking professional help: If things feel a bit too much, professional help is available, and it's okay to reach out.
