In Scotland the number of people living to an older age is increasing. As people age, their requirements change, but a good diet and keeping active can help prevent potential health problems and play a key part in ageing well.

By the age of forty almost all people with Down’s Syndrome have developed changes in the brain linked with dementia. Despite this, there is still a lack of understanding on how to care for people with learning disabilities and dementia. ENABLE Scotland member Peter’s family witnessed this first-hand when he developed dementia at age 55.

ENABLE Scotland have teamed up with Alzheimer Scotland, Down's Syndrome Scotland, Life Changes Trust and Playlist for Life to help tackle this issue and signpost help and resources available to the people we support, careers and families. 3 workshops will be happening in Elgin in the coming weeks to help raise awareness about this.

Loxa Court - 30 New Homes With Care Facilities for Elgin

Health & Social Care Moray (HSCM) have established an exciting working partnership with Hanover Scotland and Allied Healthcare. The partnership project is focused on the delivery of the new Loxa Court independent living area situated in Hamilton Gardens housing development in the north west of Elgin.

Loxa Court, a purpose built housing development providing housing with care facilities for those including those with age impaired frailty. There will be 30 properties in total for the use predominately for the over 60s; five of these are designed for wheelchair users and another five for those with dementia.

Elgin resident, Alastair McPherson, won the recent naming competition for the development; Loxa being the Roman name for the nearby River Lossie.

HSCM project lead: Lesley Attridge said:

‘The Loxa Court project gives us a great opportunity to expand on our experience of working in partnership with other agencies. Hanover Scotland are providing the buildings and the landlord function with Allied Healthcare are providing the care component.

"We are hugely excited by the project and as we near the completion date, it is fantastic to see so much interest in the new properties. We know delivering care at the person’s home is key to trying to maintain a good quality of life, and it is great that we are able to do so at Loxa Court.’

Hanover’s Director of Customer Services, Chris Milburn said:

"Loxa Court is well on the way to becoming a fantastic new Hanover development in Elgin, which will provide much needed housing for people in need of a high quality home. The positive joint working with Moray Council, HSCM and Allied Healthcare will ensure that the development is an exemplar of what residents can expect from Extra Care and Amenity housing. We are rightly proud of this new addition to Hanover's portfolio of properties in Moray, which demonstrates our long standing and continuing commitment to the area. There has been a fantastic response so far and we are very confident that there will be high demand for the new properties. If you or someone you know is interested in living on Loxa Court please contact Hanover’s Elgin office on 01343 548585."

Steve Gotts, Registered Manager, Allied Healthcare said:

‘We have only recently become part of this project however recruitment is already well under way. We are seeing a great deal of interest from all over Moray and are delighted by the number of applicants who are new to the care sector, as well as those with a great deal of experience looking forward to delivering outcome focused, specialist care within a state of the art environment.’

Loxa Court is expected to open in Autumn 2019.

For people who work in care,
checking and changing pads is the norm.
you know loads of old songs.
your team of 2 can get over 20 adults in to bed within an hour or so making sure 100% care and dignity is given.
you find yourself repeating things you say just to make a dementia patient feel safe.

the word Care inspectorate sends panic through you even though you know everything will be fine.

if you don't come home exhausted and sweaty you know you haven't worked the hardest that you can, after a long hard day.

you hate it when your friends say “why are you so tired? you only wipe bums and make cups of tea all day” forgetting that care is 100x more than that.
you know what everyone likes for breakfast and how they like their tea/coffee without even having to ask them and you also know their favourite place to sit, time to go to bed and favourite thing to watch or do.

you struggle on a daily basis to try and get people to eat and drink fluids just so they stay alive.

you can recite all the bowel types and a detailed explanation of what they look like without looking at the chart.

there are hundreds of clothes and footwear but you know who they belong to.

you’re there when they wake up and there when they go to sleep.
you’re there on the good days and the bad.
you’re also there when they need end of life care right up until thier last breath, putting your own fears aside and talking to them or stroking thier hair as they take their shallow breaths.

you care for these people like they are your own, helping them, listening, reassuring, laughing, cuddling.

you leave work looking like you've been dragged through a bush backwards despite leaving the house in a respectable way 15 hours earlier, but you know what?
i’m a carer and I’m PROUD! 👩🏻‍⚕️.

We are encouraging residents in the Highlands & Islands to sign up to a free app which provides community alerts if a person with dementia has been reported missing.

Purple Alert was launched by Alzheimer Scotland last year and creates a way of sharing information which could help return vulnerable people home safely.

The app - endorsed by Police Scotland - works best if a number of people in a community have downloaded it in order to share details and possible sighting of the missing person.

The app, which is available on iPhone and Android, uses GPS technology to send an alert to all users within a 30-mile radius.

Sergeant David Campbell, Highlands and Islands Division missing persons co-ordinator, is encouraging people to download Purple Alert during Scottish Missing Persons Week which runs from Monday, May 28 until Sunday, June 3.

He said: "People go missing for a variety of reasons and unfortunately people who have dementia becoming lost or disorientated is something that we can be faced with.

"This not only puts the missing person at risk but it also causes considerable distress for their loved ones.

"Speed is of the essence in any missing person enquiry - the longer someone is missing, particularly if they are vulnerable, then the greater the risk to them.

"New technologies such as the Purple Alert app can be an invaluable aid as they allow information to be shared quickly in the local area.

"I would encourage as many people as possible to download it so they can play their part in looking after vulnerable people in our communities.

"It is easy to use and by downloading it you could play your part in helping us get a person with dementia home safely."

Joyce Gray, Deputy Director of Development for Alzheimer Scotland, added: “Purple Alert is a community based app for people living with dementia to support in a missing person search or for those who have lost their way and sits alongside the important work of the Police Scotland National Missing Persons Unit. The app shares key information at the point of crisis and allows for more eyes and ears on the ground helping with the immediate search.

“Our continued partnership with Police Scotland has helped to strengthen the reach of our app and has supported increased trust in the app from the public.

"We’d thank the Highlands and Islands division for their support and for helping to increase awareness of the app during this important action week.”

The Purple Alert app has been specially designed by people living with dementia by Alzheimer Scotland.
