💡 What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain in the heel and bottom of the foot. It happens when the plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from your heel to your toes—becomes irritated or inflamed.
🔍 What Causes It?
The plantar fascia acts like a shock absorber and supports the arch of your foot. Repetitive stress or strain can cause small tears in the tissue, leading to inflammation. Common causes include:
• Overuse (running, walking long distances)
• Improper footwear (e.g., unsupportive shoes)
• Flat feet or high arches
• Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon
• Obesity or sudden weight gain
• Standing for long periods
🩺 Symptoms
• Sharp pain in the heel (especially with the first steps in the morning or after sitting)
• Pain that improves with activity but returns after rest
• Pain after long periods of standing or walking
🧰 Treatment Options
Most cases can be treated without surgery:
1. Rest & Ice – Reduce inflammation.
2. Stretching exercises – Especially calf and foot stretches.
3. Supportive footwear or orthotics
4. Night splints – Keep the foot flexed overnight.
5. Physical therapy
6. Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., ibuprofen)
If conservative treatments don’t help, options may include:
• Corticosteroid injections
• Shockwave therapy
• Surgery (rare)
