โEngyโ will step down from his Head Coach role with our First Team at the end of the game, drawing the curtain on an eventful two-and-a-half years back at the club.
Gaz returned in 2023 following the departure of our former coach and, after steadying the ship, guided the lads away from the wrong end of the table and into the playoffs โ eventually losing out to winners Hunslet. From day one, he set the standard, demanding the absolute best from his players. The respect between Gaz, his staff and the squad was clear to see, and it quickly showed on the training pitch.
In 2024, with a strong pre-season behind them โ highlighted by the memorable Challenge Cup clash with Wakefield โ Engy, alongside Jake, Russ and Jason, built a tight-knit squad on and off the field. The team went from strength to strength, finishing top of the league and breaking records along the way, though once again falling short in the Grand Final against Hunslet.
That defeat only added fuel to the fire. In 2025, despite a few changes in personnel, Gaz kept the group focused and flying. The lads finished first once again, securing the League Leaders Shield for the second consecutive season โ an outstanding achievement at the very top level of the community game. Gaz has always kept to a small squad, but at the same time has given chances to those who deserve a shirt, and if they've gone well, he's never forgotten them embracing the pathway between Junior and Open Age.
Whatever the result this Saturday against West Hull, Gaz English has already cemented his place in Siddal folklore โ a true club legend, both on and off the field.

โThis week has been a bit of a strange week really it's the last week for me at training and the last week of game prep, it's been really good, just short of 3 season back coaching for myself, back to back league leaders and back to back Grand Finals. I think I'm leaving the club in a better place than what it was in when I started so I'm proud of what we have achieved, and to finish off with a Grand Final win against West Hull will be classโ
โWest Hull are a really good team that goes without saying, you don't get to grand finals and not be a good team. We have had two very good games against them this year and I think we know what to expect off each other, I think it will be a close game, we have prepared well this week and the lads are ready to go. I can't thank the lads enough for their efforts over the last three seasons, now we just need to get the job done and get the win which the lads deserveโ
