👣 FEET 👣

🦶Let’s talk about feet!

💡 Did you know, typically everyone is born with flat feet! When baby’s are born, they have little fat pads in the soles of their feet, these give off the impression of flat feet until your little one’s arches start to emerge. This doesn‘t happen until they are up on their feet and walking confidently for a good period of time, typically between 3-5 years of age. Then you may notice in standing position an arch is not apparent but when they are sitting or the big toe is gently taken backwards, or go up on to both tip toes an arch starts to appear/correct itself which is part of normal variance in feet.

🧐 If you have concerns about your little ones feet, are worried about their foot posture in standing & walking please get in touch and we can advise about what is typical and what isn’t and can advise/support appropriately.

👧 Some toddlers/children may also toe walk……
They may do this for a number of reasons:
When learning to walk it can be common for little ones to go up onto their tip toes for stability and may also be for sensory feedback.
If this is happening more than walking with heels down and continues beyond 2-3 years old and is accompanied by other motor problems or delay then would be advised to get this looked at by a Paediatric Physiotherapist.

🙏 Remember these things as with lots of things in development are not judged as a snapshot in time, but rather what their predominant go-to is over time, and whether it is interfering with function or leading to pain.

⚡️STAMINA ⚡️

💡 Stamina, or endurance, means the ability of the body to continue activities for a period of time without fatiguing/tiring.

✅ Strength & endurance are important to enable children to perform every day functions such as fine motor skills (e.g. holding a pencil appropriately, cleaning teeth), gross motor skills (e.g. carrying school bags, walking, running, skipping, playground skills such as climbing, and sporting skills such as catching, throwing and hitting a ball with a bat). Muscular endurance helps with maintaining different postures throughout the day.

💪 Ways to improve stamina and reduce fatigue….
- Build core muscle strength
- Improve functional muscle strength
- Simplify physical skills into one or two steps to teach the skill and then gradually add in additional components until the skill is able to be done in its entirety.
- Gradually increase duration and intensity of activity to increase endurance.
- Make the activity fun: Choose activities that the whole family can be involved in or where children are with their friends and they don’t realise they are physically working hard (e.g. bike riding, swimming, garden games).

🧐 When you might want to seek support/advice from a Paediatric Physio for your child….
- Perhaps they are not managing to ‘cope’ with the physical demands of a full school day.
- Struggling to participating in sporting activities for extended periods of time.
- Poor self esteem when the child realises their skills do not match their peers.
- Poor fine motor skills (e.g. writing, drawing and cutting) due to poor core stability meaning that the child does not have a strong base to support the controlled use of their arms and hands.

🙏 At Children in Motion, we sometimes see children who when we ask them what they are struggling with; “keeping up with their friends, feeling tired quickly, achey legs” are some of the things that come up. When we dig a little deeper and work on gradual strengthening this is where we see these things improve because their stamina is improving.

🩻 POSTURE 🩻

👍 Before the start of a busy new academic year is an ideal time to check in on your child's overall posture.

⭐️ Your child's posture is the position they hold their bodies in when they lie down, sit up and stand up. Posture is not judged as a snapshot in time, but rather what their predominant go-to is over time.

✅ For some children, a verbal prompt or regular physical activity or changes in position to keep them strong and active are enough to correct a posture that is not ideal.

❎ If your child has a poor posture, such as a chin-poking posture, rounded upper back/shoulders, excessively arched lower back/pushed out belly, that persists, causes regular pain or interferes significantly with their functional skills, it is advised that you seek professional advice.

👞 SCHOOL SHOES 👞

⭐️ With the Autumn Term fast approaching, your child may need a new pair of school shoes. It is very important to buy the correct footwear because incorrect or shoes that are too tight fitting can stop the toes from having enough space and could stop the foot from growing correctly.

It is recommended that:
👍 Your child's feet are measured by a professional, not just for the length of the foot, but also the width.
👍 Take your child's school socks/tights to fit the school shoes with - these should not be tight fitting either.
👍 If your child wears insoles, take the insoles with you when fitting new shoes to ensure the shoes accommodate the insoles.
👍 Your child's toes have enough room to move and the front of the shoe should be wider than at the heel, i.e. not pointy toes. There should be approximately 1cm space at the end of the toes inside the shoe.
👍 Some children, including children with joint hypermobility, ambulant physical disabilities, instability of the ankle and flat feet, benefit particularly from firm shoes. You can check this by squishing the back of the shoe to feel the firmness - you should not be able to squeeze the sides together or push the back down (compare it to other shoes to get a feel for it)
👍 Look for a flexible sole, one that allows the foot to bend (at the joints between your foot and toes) - you can feel this by bending the shoe with your hand. If however, you are able to twist the sole to the sides, it is too soft and will not support the foot well.
👍 Make sure the shoes have enough grip on the bottom of the shoe, i.e. not a smooth sole, and that it is not slippery.
👍 Consider how the shoes are fastened - laces, buckles or velcro, depending on your child's ability to do their shoes up independently.
👍 They need to be COMFORTABLE!

🩷 TESTIMONIAL 🩷

⭐️ Sophie received this lovely testimonial recently and we thought it deserved to be shared!

"I've been bringing my son to Sophie for nearly a year, and I am so grateful to have found her. From the very first session she has made us both comfortable, understood, and motivated. Sophie has played such an important role in supporting his gross motor development through early intervention. She takes the time to understand his needs and makes every session positive and purposeful. The progress he’s made, both physically and in confidence, has been wonderful. I've also learned so much from Sophie, whose advice and support have been amazing. She’s knowledgeable, kind, and deeply dedicated. I couldn’t recommend her more highly to any family seeking expert physiotherapy for their child." - Charlotte

🦓 HYPERMOBILITY SPECTRUM DISORDER (HSD) 🦓

🩷 It's also HSD Awareness Month this month!

⭐️ Hypermobility has a wide range of impacts & symptoms, ranging from:

🤸 Joint laxity with NO symptoms & can sometimes be beneficial e.g. gymnastics.

🦴 Joint laxity with MILD symptoms such as developmental delay in infants, joint pain, muskuloskeletal asymmetries & fatigue, which has a functional impact on a person’s day to day living.

💊 Joint laxity with SEVERE symptoms of pain and chronic fatigue which has a significant functional impact on a person’s daily living (such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome - hEDS).

🦓 EDS AWARENESS MONTH 🦓

🍀 EDS is a rare and often misdiagnosed condition which is why EDS Awareness Month is important as it is so regularly over looked.

🩷 This EDS Awareness Month we wanted to highlight how we could help your child if you have any concerns.

👩‍⚕️ Our Children’s Physiotherapists would assess your child’s needs and put together a Progressive Resistance Strength Training Programme for your child which will help with increased strength, improved balance, improved functional activities, reduced pain, reduced fatigue & improved participation!
