WELCOME
This guide has been prepared to give you some idea of the facilities we offer all our residents at the Home. We are aware that this is a difficult & emotional time for you and your family, but our aim is to help you adjust, in your own time, to these new surroundings. We encourage you to bring personal belongings such as photographs, ornaments, your favourite chair (subject to space and fi
re regulations) and other familiar items to personalise your room. There are 17 bedrooms in the Home, two of which are twin rooms; all are fitted with a wash basin & mirror. A further 12 en-suite rooms were added in 2012
We will encourage you to maintain as much independence as you are able, forge new friendships and help & support you in any way we can. Fairhaven was originally the Station Hotel before changing to a Care Home 20 years ago and is currently the only care home in Soham. Soham is only a few miles from the larger towns of Ely, Newmarket and Cambridge, there are a lot of historical interests such as Ely Cathedral and its associated buildings, Cambridge with its links to education and the Boat Race and Newmarket, famous for its horse racing fraternity. Introduction
With several years’ experience within the Care Sector, the Management of Fair Haven Care Home prides themselves on offering a professional care service, with the resident at the centre of its working. When people find themselves in a position where they can no longer look after themselves at home, for whatever reason, we aim to provide a Home which we know will not replace their own home but will be a place where they can relax, be cared for in a safe, caring & dignified setting and enjoy the company of likeminded fellow residents. The Home is a happy place, where residents will be encouraged to have as high quality of life as their conditions allows and where the staff can assist residents in achieving this aim. Residents are encouraged to make choices and decisions regarding their care and the amount of assistance they may require maintaining activities of daily living, but maintaining as much independence as possible. Aims and Objectives
Fair Haven aims to provide its residents with a secure, relaxed and homely environment in which their care, well-being, and comfort are a priority. Staff will strive to preserve and maintain dignity, privacy and most importantly the individuality of all its residents, within a warm and caring atmosphere. In doing this, staff will be sensitive to all residents ever changing needs. Category of Care
With the introduction of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, Homes no longer ‘register’ for categories of care. However, Homes do have to demonstrate to the Governing Body (Care Quality Commission) that they are able to meet the care needs of residents. At Fair Haven we mainly care for residents who are 55 years or over, suffer with mild Dementia and have residential requirements only. We are also able to offer short term or respite care, however this is dependent on bed availability. Facilities & Services

If you have or are attending a special occasion outside of the hairdressers normal visit day, the hairdresser will accommodate these requests with reasonable notice being given. However, if you already have your own hairdresser who is willing to attend the home please feel free to arrange this directly with them. Our hairdresser’s services are invoiced separately or can be paid directly to the hairdresser on the day. Chiropody – the chiropodist attends every six weeks and will attend to your feet if you wish. However, if you already have your own chiropodist who is willing to attend the home please feel free to arrange this directly with them. Our chiropody service is invoice separately or can be paid directly to the chiropodist on the day. Doctors & District Nurses – wherever possible, we will try to keep with your registered GP, however, this is dependent on your GP location and whether their practice covers the Soham area. If they do not, in consultation with you and your family, we will discuss those GP practices which do cover the area. If you need to attend the hospital for a routine Outpatients appointment or the GP surgery, we request that this be arranged when a family member can attend with you. This is to assist us in ensuring that those residents remaining in the home continue to receive care from a full complement of staff. If it is not possible for a family member to attend with you, this will need to be discussed with the Home Manager in order that suitable arrangements are put into place to ensure the safe running and efficiency of the home is maintained. If you are admitted to hospital as an emergency, the Home will endeavour to send a staff member; however, this is not always possible particularly at night when staff numbers are reduced. What we will do is contact family members immediately to advise them of the situation and that we have been unable to send a staff member. Rest assured full information, kept in duplicate, is always sent to the hospital to advise them of medical history, medications etc. At times the hospital is not able to provide transport to appointments and if family members are unable to transport, we will need to organise specialised taxi firms to undertake this role. This will be invoiced separately to those residents requiring that service. Opticians & Dentist – we encourage residents to continue to use their own opticians & dentist, alternatively we can access these to visit the home if preferred. With both these services payment must be paid directly to the supplier. Clergy – residents are encouraged to maintain their religious beliefs and we will assist wherever possible, to ensure this need is met. Newspapers – newspapers & magazines can be ordered from our local newsagent but this will need organising by a family member or friend who would also need to take responsibility for the payment of the bill. Activities – the Home has an Activities Coordinator, who organisers trips out, organisers entertainers to come into the home and also suppliers of clothing, footwear etc. for those unable to get out to the shops. In relation
to suppliers coming into the home it is a ‘pay on the day’ system, so residents will require access to money on those occasions. Entertainers coming into the home are paid for via the Residents fund, some day trips out are also financed this way. On occasion a nominal fee may be payable for entrance fees or if external transport is required. An activities board is situated in the hall area detailing all upcoming events. Rest assured residents do not have to take part or go out if they do not wish too! Resident & Relatives meeting – are held every month and is an opportunity to have your say. The meetings will have the Home Manager and the Activities Coordinator present. Housekeeping & Laundry – the housekeeping team ensure the Home and your room are cleaned regularly and your clothes are laundered when required. We request that clothes are named prior to admission to the home and that all clothes are suitable for washing in industrial washing machine, as we cannot accept liability for clothes shrunk or damaged. If family members wish to laundered your clothing this can be organised also. Catering – please refer to our catering guide
