Many people describe struggling with low confidence - but anxiety and overthinking are often what sit underneath it.

When the nervous system stays on alert, self-doubt grows and confidence naturally drops. Understanding this link can be reassuring and help explain why confidence fluctuates.

I’ve shared a short article expanding on this, following a recent column in the Ely Standard.

Simple, practical strategies can calm the nervous system and reduce the intensity of anxious thoughts and physical symptoms.

Many people assume phobias are 'just fears', but if you’ve experienced one, you’ll know they can feel intense and physical - sometimes completely overwhelming.

I’ve written a short article explaining why phobias feel so strong, what’s happening in the nervous system, and why these reactions don’t mean anything is wrong with you.

Many people notice that low confidence and anxiety often go together. Feeling unsure of yourself can quietly increase anxiety — and ongoing anxiety can slowly wear away confidence.

Understanding this connection can be an important first step towards feeling calmer, more capable and more in control again.

I’ve written a short article exploring how low confidence and anxiety interact, and why this pattern is so common.

Anxiety specialist in Ely & Newmarket

Many people notice anxiety shows up as feeling calmer… and then suddenly returning again.

This doesn’t mean you’ve failed or gone backwards. It’s often part of the nervous system learning to feel safe again, especially during periods of stress or change.

I’ve explained this in more detail in my latest blog, which many people find reassuring and helpful: https://danreganhypnotherapy.co.uk/dans-blog/anxiety-stress-a-panic-attacks/why-anxiety-can-return-after-feeling-better/

Overthinking is one of the most exhausting parts of anxiety.

Many people tell me it feels like their mind won’t switch off — replaying conversations, worrying about the future, or analysing every sensation in their body.

This isn’t a sign that anything is wrong with you. It’s often the nervous system staying on high alert, trying to protect you.

When the body learns that it’s safe again, the mind usually begins to settle too.

Support is available — and things can feel calmer over time.

If anxiety or overthinking feels familiar, you’re not alone.

Anxiety doesn’t just live in the mind — it often shows up very strongly in the body.

Tightness in the chest, dizziness, racing heart or feeling on edge can be frightening, especially when you don’t understand why it’s happening.

After recently writing about this for the Ely Standard, I’ve shared a short blog explaining why anxiety often feels so physical, and how the nervous system plays a key role.

If anxiety symptoms have ever felt confusing or overwhelming, this may help explain what’s going on.

When anxiety feels overwhelming, it’s natural to want to know how quickly things can improve.

Anxiety begins to settle when the nervous system is supported — rather than fought against. This can mean reduced physical tension, calmer reactions, and a greater sense of control.

I’ve shared a short article explaining how hypnotherapy can help calm anxiety, what’s realistic to expect, and why “quick fixes” aren’t always the answer (link in comments).

Anxiety isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you.

It’s often a nervous system that’s learned to stay on high alert — and it can be helped.

In my work as an anxiety hypnotherapist in Ely, I support people with panic, worry, physical anxiety symptoms and loss of confidence. Many people see this as a calm, effective form of anxiety therapy, particularly when they feel stuck.

If you’re in Ely or Newmarket and would like to talk things through, I offer a free consultation.

Returning to Work Anxiety:

If today feels heavier than you expected, you’re not alone.

Many people experience anxiety when returning to work — tight chest, restless sleep, racing thoughts or a sense of dread — even if they usually cope well.

I’ve shared a short article explaining returning to work anxiety and how to approach this transition more calmly:

As the year comes to a close, it’s common to feel a mix of emotions — relief, reflection, uncertainty, or quiet anxiety about what’s next.

There’s no right way to feel today. You don’t need to sum up the year, set goals, or feel positive about January just yet.

If your mind feels busy or your body feels tense, that doesn’t mean anything is wrong — it simply reflects a period of change and transition.

Gentle steps, steady ground, and support all still count as progress.

If anxiety feels louder at this time of year, you’re not alone — and help is available when you’re ready.
