Why do some thoughts feel so hard to switch off?

You might notice certain thoughts seem to stay with you longer than others - replaying, coming back, or feeling like they need to be worked out.

This is something many people experience.

And it’s often not the thought itself that keeps it going.

It’s how the mind responds to it - analysing it, checking it, or trying to feel certain about it.

The more attention it receives, the more it tends to return.

When you begin to see this pattern more clearly, it often starts to lose its intensity.

I’ve written a short article explaining this in more detail.

Do social situations leave you feeling exhausted… even when they go well?

You can have conversations, appear confident, and everything seems fine on the surface…

…but afterwards you feel mentally drained or need time to recover.

This is more common than many people realise.

And it’s often not about a lack of confidence.

👉 It’s about how your mind processes stimulation - sometimes combined with anxiety and overthinking.

Understanding this can take a lot of pressure off.

I’ve written a short article explaining this in more detail.

Do you ever find yourself replaying conversations after they’ve happened?

Thinking about what you said, how it sounded, or how it might have been taken?

This is something many people experience, particularly in social situations.

From the outside, everything might seem fine. But internally, it can feel like your mind is working overtime. It’s not about a lack of confidence or social ability. It’s usually a pattern linked to anxiety and self-focus.

I’ve written a short article explaining why this happens and what helps.

I was recently featured in the Ely Standard discussing panic attacks - something I see regularly in my work here in Ely.

Panic attacks can feel extremely frightening, especially if you don’t know what’s happening at the time. Many people understandably think something serious is wrong with their body.

In reality, these symptoms are part of the body’s natural “fight or flight” response.

Understanding this can be a really important first step in feeling more calm and in control.

It’s encouraging to see anxiety being talked about more openly locally.

In recent years, more people in Ely have been experiencing anxiety.

This can show up in different ways - overthinking, physical symptoms, panic, or a constant feeling of being on edge.

Often, people say things like “nothing is actually wrong” or “I don’t understand why I feel like this.”

In many cases, it’s not about one specific cause. It’s how the mind and body respond to ongoing pressure and difficulty switching off.

You’re not alone in this - many people are experiencing similar patterns, even if it’s not always talked about.

I’ve written a short article exploring why anxiety is becoming more common and what helps.

Health anxiety can be one of the most difficult forms of anxiety to deal with.

Even when you’ve been reassured that everything is okay, the doubt can quickly return — sometimes even stronger than before.

This isn’t because something has been missed. It’s because anxiety affects how the brain and body respond to physical sensations.

I’ve written a short article explaining why health anxiety feels so real and why reassurance doesn’t always last.

Intrusive thoughts are something many people experience, especially during periods of anxiety.

They can feel very real and often quite distressing — particularly when they seem out of character or difficult to control.

One of the most important things to understand is that intrusive thoughts are not a reflection of who you are.

In fact, the distress they cause is often a sign that they go against what matters to you.

I’ve written a short article explaining why intrusive thoughts happen and how anxiety plays a role.

Panic attacks can feel incredibly intense, especially when they come on suddenly.

Many people describe symptoms such as a racing heart, breathlessness or a sense of losing control, which can make the experience even more frightening.

Although these sensations feel overwhelming, they are part of the body’s natural response and will pass.

In the moment, simple techniques such as slowing your breathing or focusing on the present can help your body begin to settle.

I’ve written a new article explaining how to calm a panic attack and what’s happening in the body.
