Anxiety doesn’t just live in the mind — it often shows up very strongly in the body.

Tightness in the chest, dizziness, racing heart or feeling on edge can be frightening, especially when you don’t understand why it’s happening.

After recently writing about this for the Ely Standard, I’ve shared a short blog explaining why anxiety often feels so physical, and how the nervous system plays a key role.

If anxiety symptoms have ever felt confusing or overwhelming, this may help explain what’s going on.

Anxiety often shows up in the body as well as the mind. Why anxiety feels physical, how the nervous system responds, and common reactions.

When anxiety feels overwhelming, it’s natural to want to know how quickly things can improve.

Anxiety begins to settle when the nervous system is supported — rather than fought against. This can mean reduced physical tension, calmer reactions, and a greater sense of control.

I’ve shared a short article explaining how hypnotherapy can help calm anxiety, what’s realistic to expect, and why “quick fixes” aren’t always the answer (link in comments).

Support is available locally in Ely and Newmarket if anxiety has been affecting your daily life.

Anxiety isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you.

It’s often a nervous system that’s learned to stay on high alert — and it can be helped.

In my work as an anxiety hypnotherapist in Ely, I support people with panic, worry, physical anxiety symptoms and loss of confidence. Many people see this as a calm, effective form of anxiety therapy, particularly when they feel stuck.

If you’re in Ely or Newmarket and would like to talk things through, I offer a free consultation.

As the year comes to a close, it’s common to feel a mix of emotions — relief, reflection, uncertainty, or quiet anxiety about what’s next.

There’s no right way to feel today. You don’t need to sum up the year, set goals, or feel positive about January just yet.

If your mind feels busy or your body feels tense, that doesn’t mean anything is wrong — it simply reflects a period of change and transition.

Gentle steps, steady ground, and support all still count as progress.

If anxiety feels louder at this time of year, you’re not alone — and help is available when you’re ready.

Physical Anxiety Symptoms Explained

Anxiety doesn’t only live in your thoughts — it shows up physically too.

A racing heart, tight chest, dizziness, nausea or muscle tension are all common physical anxiety symptoms. They can feel alarming, especially when they appear out of the blue.

These sensations are part of the body’s stress response — uncomfortable, but not dangerous. Understanding them can make a real difference.

A Gentle Reset Between Christmas and New Year

The days between Christmas and New Year can feel strangely unsettled.

Routines are still disrupted, motivation can feel low, and there’s often a quiet sense of “I should be doing something” without clarity on what that is.

This in-between period is a very normal time for anxiety, overthinking or emotional flatness to show up — especially after weeks of build-up and stimulation.

You don’t need to fix anything right now.

Sometimes the most helpful thing is allowing your nervous system to settle before January begins.

If anxiety, overwhelm or tension has been lingering, you can explore helpful support options here:

For many people, the days after Christmas can bring a sudden dip in mood or a rise in anxiety.

Once the build-up ends, routines disappear, emotions settle, and the nervous system finally has space to react. This can show up as restlessness, low mood, worry, or a sense of emotional flatness.

These reactions are a common response to weeks of pressure and stimulation.

If this time of year feels unsettling rather than relaxing, you may find this helpful:

Christmas can be a joyful time, but it can also bring pressure, tiredness and heightened emotions. If you’re feeling more anxious than usual right now, it doesn’t mean you’re going backwards — it simply means your nervous system has been under strain.

Changes in routine, social expectations, family dynamics and the sheer busyness of this time of year can all amplify anxiety. Many people notice increased worry, overthinking, physical tension or a sense of overwhelm during the festive period.

If today feels heavy, try to be gentle with yourself. You don’t need to feel grateful, cheerful or “make the most of it” to be doing okay. Sometimes the most helpful thing is simply allowing yourself to slow down, breathe and take the day as it comes.

Support is available — during Christmas and beyond. Anxiety doesn’t need to be faced alone, and calmer days are possible even if it doesn’t feel that way right now.

Wishing you a peaceful Christmas, whatever that looks like for you.

Just a gentle reminder as Christmas approaches.

If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed or not very festive, you’re not failing — you’re human. This time of year can bring pressure, tiredness and emotional overload.

It’s okay to rest.
It’s okay to say no.
It’s okay to put your well-being first.

End of Year Reflection & Overthinking

As Christmas approaches, many people start reflecting on the year – and for some, this can lead to overthinking or anxiety.

If you’ve noticed your mind replaying mistakes, worries or “what ifs”, you’re not alone. End of year reflection can be emotionally heavy, especially alongside festive pressure.

I’ve shared a short article explaining why this happens and how to approach it more positively 👇
