Day 8 of our countdown to Christmas with some sensory calm: Swinging

Todayโ€™s tip is a favourite and our little helper was very excited to demonstrate this one! ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿช

Swinging can offer wonderfully soothing vestibular input, helping your child reset when Christmas energy starts to feel a bit overwhelming.

Hereโ€™s how swinging can support sensory calm:

โœจ Provides calming vestibular input
โ€“ Helps the brain organise movement information
โ€“ Supports balance, coordination, and overall regulation

โœจ Creates a soothing rhythmic motion
โ€“ Gentle back-and-forth movement can naturally calm the nervous system
โ€“ Helps settle busy bodies and quieten busy minds

โœจ Reduces sensory overwhelm
โ€“ A helpful break when your child is overloaded by noise, lights, or festive excitement
โ€“ Offers a predictable and comforting sensory experience

โœจ Supports emotional regulation
โ€“ Movement can release tension and lower stress
โ€“ Helps children feel more grounded and in control

โœจ A great movement break during busy days
โ€“ Just a few minutes can help children return to activities feeling more settled
โ€“ Works indoors or outdoors, depending on your space

Swinging is simple, soothing, and always a hit with our little helpers!

Itโ€™s nearly Christmas, and our SALT, Michelle, has been enjoying a festive Attention Autism session with her children! ๐ŸŽ„โœจ

With Christmas fast approaching, we kicked things off with a jolly Christmas theme, featuring wind-up Santas and penguins racing in sleighs for Stage 1 (Bucket). The excitement was contagious, and everyone was fully engaged! ๐Ÿ

In Stage 2, Michelle demonstrated how to make a charming polar bear, guiding the children step-by-step. Some children took quick movement breaks, while others observed from a comfortable distance, creating a relaxed and engaging atmosphere. ๐Ÿปโ„๏ธ

Stage 3 brought even more creativity with Christmas tree decorations. Whether using fingers to create designs or cotton buds to avoid the sensory sensation of paint, it was wonderful to see the children personalise their craft projects. ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ

The kids were so eager to make their own polar bears, so we set up a separate craft activity where they could dive into even more festive fun! ๐ŸŽจโœจ

It was the perfect blend of creativity, sensory exploration, and Christmas joy! ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„

Day 4 of our countdown to Christmas with some sensory calm: Jumping on a Trampoline

Todayโ€™s tip is extra special, weโ€™ve got some of our little helpers demonstrating this one! ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿคธโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ซ

Jumping on a trampoline is a fantastic way to help children regulate their bodies and emotions, especially during the excitement of December.

Hereโ€™s how trampolining can support sensory calm:

โœจ Provides strong proprioceptive input
โ€“ Helps the body understand where it is in space
โ€“ Promotes grounding and a sense of stability

โœจ Releases built-up energy
โ€“ Allows children to move freely and burn off excess excitement
โ€“ Ideal for those who struggle to sit still during busy festive days

โœจ Supports emotional regulation
โ€“ Rhythmic movement can help reduce stress and tension
โ€“ Encourages a naturally calming โ€œresetโ€

โœจ Boosts mood and focus
โ€“ Movement increases feel-good chemicals in the brain
โ€“ Helps children return to activities feeling more settled

โœจ Offers a structured movement break
โ€“ Prevents overwhelm by giving the body the input it needs
โ€“ Can be done indoors or outdoors depending on your setup

Jumping is fun, regulating, and accessible โ€” no wonder our little helpers loved showing this one!

๐ŸŽ„ Christmas Stress Bucket Tips for Neurodivergent Children ๐ŸŽ„

The festive season is full of joy, but it can also bring extra challenges for our neurodivergent children. To help manage this, weโ€™ve created the Christmas Stress Bucket visual , a helpful way to understand and manage stress during this busy time of year.

๐ŸŒŸ What fills the bucket?

Sensory overload (bright lights, loud noises)

Routine changes (school breaks, surprise visitors)

Social pressure (family gatherings, expectations to perform)

Unpredictability (unexpected outings, surprises)

๐ŸŒŸ How can we empty the bucket?

Create quiet spaces

Use visual schedules and social stories

Offer noise-reducing headphones

Encourage movement breaks or stimming

Keep expectations flexible and realistic

๐ŸŽ This Christmas, weโ€™re supporting families to ensure the holidays are more manageable and fun for everyone. Check out our Christmas Stress Bucket resources to keep the festive season calm and enjoyable!

Movie Time Social Learning โ€“ Wallace and Gromit ๐ŸŽฅ๐ŸŽฌ

Today, our SALT therapist Lydia, focused on exploring โ€˜Thoughts and Feelingsโ€™ while encouraging predictions using the movie Wallace and Gromit. It was a fantastic session, especially considering how challenging it can be for this young person to talk about their own thoughts and emotions.

Introducing the concept of how characters might feel was a breakthrough moment, as it allowed him to refer to the feelings of others in the story. But the real highlight came when he confidently expressed how he would feel in a given situation if he were the character โ€“ a huge achievement! ๐ŸŒŸ

Weโ€™re incredibly proud of the progress made today! ๐Ÿ™Œ
