Worth sharing this info about Lewy Bodies Disease, a lesser talked about, but one of the main types of Dementia around us.
Lewy body dementia is strongly associated with suspicion, paranoia, and false accusations.
This is because this condition affects perception and reality processing.
Lewy body dementia often involves hallucinations, delusions, and fluctuating awareness. Experiences that aren’t real to others can feel absolutely real to the person. Accusations of stealing, poisoning, or “people coming into the house” often stem from these vivid perceptions.
Because awareness can fluctuate, carers may feel confused by how “clear” the person seems at times which can make accusations feel even more intentional. They aren’t.
These beliefs come from altered brain signalling.
When accusations are linked to hallucinations or strong beliefs, avoid arguing or trying to disprove what they are seeing or feeling.
Respond to the emotion, not the experience itself, with calm reassurance such as:
“That sounds frightening” or “I can see this feels very real to you.”
Reduce environmental triggers like shadows, mirrors, low lighting, or visual clutter, which can worsen hallucinations.
Because Lewy body dementia is very sensitive to medication, always seek medical advice before any changes. Some medications can significantly worsen symptoms.
Be kind.
