Know anyone like this? Almost 1 in 4 people living in the UK will experience some form of mental health. Of those 96% are unlikely to talk about it. If this was someone you love, what can you do to help? For me living with depression is a daily choice between fighting really hard to be like everyone else or slipping into a silent oblivion. After years of counselling, CBT, pills, and anything I could think of to help, I found the most simplest and profound support was gratitude. When I got a friend to help me practice, I felt so much better. Not everyone has someone they love helping. So this thought led to me writing a book in the hope of helping many more people. My mum worries about money. My brother worries about money. For most of my life, I thought that was just... what you do. You worry about money. It's normal. It's responsible, even.
But here's what I've learned: I wasn't worrying about MY money situation. I was carrying THEIR worry. I'd absorbed it like a sponge: their phrases, their fears, their relationship with scarcity, and it was running my financial life without me even noticing.
One of the most powerful exercises I ever did was called a Money Genogram. It's like a family tree, but instead of tracing genetics, you trace money beliefs. Who said what? Who was afraid of what? What was the emotional atmosphere around money in your childhood?
When I mapped it, I could suddenly SEE where my beliefs came from. They weren't mine. They were inherited. And the moment I saw that; truly saw it, I had a choice I didn't know I had before: keep the story, or write a new one.
I chose to write a new one. I still honour where I come from. But I stopped living someone else's financial fear.
This is one of the exercises we do in Money Calm. It's gentle, it's private (you never share anything you don't want to), and it's genuinely life-changing to see your patterns on paper.

I learned this from self-compassion research and it genuinely changed my relationship with money more than any budget ever did.
It's called a Self-Compassion Break, and it has three steps:

"This is a moment of struggle."

๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž ๐ข๐ญ:
"Struggle with money is human. Millions of people are feeling this right now. I'm not broken โ€” I'm normal."

๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฉ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐๐ž ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐:
"May I be gentle with myself and take one wise step."

That's it.

๐‡๐ž๐ซ๐ž'๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ฒ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ: when we feel shame about money, our brain goes into threat mode. We either avoid (don't look at the bill, don't open the app) or we spiral (catastrophise, panic-spend, lie awake). Shame makes us WORSE with money, not better.

Self-compassion interrupts the shame spiral. It calms the threat response. And from that calmer place, you can actually think clearly enough to take one useful step.

This isn't soft. It's strategic. And there's a solid body of research behind it.

Their mortgage, their holiday, their new car โ€” I have no idea what's behind any of it. And honestly? Sometimes neither do they.

๐Ÿ‘ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐š๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ "๐›๐š๐" ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฒ ๐๐ž๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง. Turns out shame makes you WORSE with money, not better. Self-compassion is the actual tool that helps you do better next time.

The letter, the bill, the balance โ€” I started doing "2-minute tidies" where I'd handle ONE tiny avoided thing. Turns out looking is less scary than imagining.

๐Ÿ“ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ž๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ฑ๐ž๐. "I'm just bad with money" became "I'm learning to be good with money." Three words made the difference: not yet, but learning.

None of these required earning more money. All of them required understanding my brain.

I want to share something a bit personal.

For years, I lay awake at night doing mental maths. Not complicated maths just... "will everything be okay?" maths.

I wasn't in crisis. I earned enough. But there was this constant, quiet hum of money worry that never fully switched off. I'd inherited it from my family without even realising. I tried budgets. I tried apps. I tried pretending it wasn't there. None of it worked because the spreadsheet was never the problem. My brain was.

So I went deep into the psychology of money. Not the "how to invest" stuff, but the "why do I feel like this?" stuff. The hidden beliefs I'd absorbed as a child. The patterns I'd inherited from my family. The way my brain was literally wired to panic about money even when the numbers said I was fine.

And it changed everything.

I sleep through the night now. I make money decisions from calm instead of panic. I stopped the 2am spirals. I even accidentally lost weightโ€ฆ turns out financial stress was doing more to my body than I realised. (True story. Happy to elaborate over a cuppa ๐Ÿ˜„)

I've since shared these tools with friends and watched them have the same lightbulb moments. It works.

Think of money like a relationship.

Some people had healthy money "role models" growing up with parents who talked openly, managed well, made them feel secure.

Some people didn't.
