💊 Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs): Use Them Wisely

With PPIs back in the news recently, it’s a good moment to talk about using them safely and responsibly.

PPIs — such as omeprazole, lansoprazole and esomeprazole — can be incredibly effective for conditions like acid reflux, heartburn and stomach ulcers. But like any medicine, they’re not designed for everyone or for long-term use without review.

✨ Tips for responsible PPI use:

Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary time.

Don’t stay on them long-term without a review. Regular check-ins with a healthcare professional help ensure they’re still needed.

Don’t self-medicate for ongoing symptoms. Persistent heartburn or indigestion deserves proper assessment — it’s not something to ignore.

If you’re considering stopping, get guidance first. Some people experience "rebound" symptoms when stopping suddenly. Some people will have to take PPIs lifelong, based on their condition.

Lifestyle habits matter too — things like meal timing, caffeine, smoking, and alcohol can impact symptoms.
