Have you heard of GSM and wondered what is it?

This is probably the most frequent perimenopause/menopause symptoms I see, yet I believe it is the most poorly treated.

After menopause, lower oestrogen levels can lead to thinning and irritation of the tissues in the va**na and urinary tract — sometimes called Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause. This can cause:

Urinary frequency
Urgency
Recurrent UTIs
Vaginal dryness or discomfort

The British Menopause Society recognise that GSM is under diagnosed and under treated.

Some research would suggest that 1 in 2 women will develop GSM post menopause. Although, it can develop in perimenopausal years.

You will need to see your GP for diagnosis and rule out other duagnoses. But treatment is simple!

Have you heard of GSM? If not, you need to read this! ⁉️

One of the least spoken about features of menopause - and its estimated over 50% of women suffer this in the years after menopause. ♀️

The gold standard treatment is oestrogen pessaries or creams into the va**na, and /or va**nal moisturisers. ⚕️

Treating it early really helps, reducing va**nal discomfort, reduces urinary frequency, reducing UTIs, and helps with psychological and s*xual health. 🚽

I didnt know this was going in, but thank you Fermanagh Herald We were truly honoured to pick up this accolade.

The entire pharmacy sector across Fermanagh and Northern Ireland are working exceptionally hard to provide a top class service for their patients, despite very challenging times. Ive never met such a resilent profession.

Even in this tough climate, pharmacists are embracing new technologies, in an effort to improve health outcomes, and to make their pharmacies more sustainable.

We are running several very successful clinics, from weight management, to blood testing, cardiac screening and ear syringing. And we won't stop there. If it improves patient outcomes, and is feasible, we will try our best to roll it out.

It is an absolute pleasure to recieve this award, but in reality, we are 1 of 500 pharmacies in N Ireland who work endlessly hard to help people. This year just happened to be our year! And we are delighted to see this award come to Fermanagh!
