Shin Splints 🏃🏻‍♂️

Shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), is a condition where repetitive stress leads to inflammation of the periosteum, the connective tissue covering the tibia, as well as irritation of the surrounding muscles and tendons.

Common Symptoms of Shin Splints include:

- Pain along the shinbone (tibia)
- Tenderness or soreness on touch
- Mild Swelling
- Pain during and/or after exercise
- Improvement with rest

Causes of Shin Splints include:

- Overtraining or Repitive stress
- Sudden increase in activity levels
- Flat Feet/Collapsed Arches or Overpronation
- Muscle and Strength imbalances
- Inadequate or poor rest and recovery

How Can Osteopathy Help?

Osteopathy can help manage shin splints by addressing underlying muscle and strength imbalances, correcting biomechanical or gait issues, and improving mobility in the lower limbs.

Through a patient-centred rehabilitation plan, an osteopath provides tailored loading strategies and exercise modifications to promote recovery and prevent recurrence. This holistic approach ensures that the root causes are addressed while optimising the body’s function and movement.

Myth 🆚 Fact

Myth: "The more you stretch, the less likely you are to get injured."

Fact: While stretching can reduce injury risk by up to 4%, excessive stretching offers no additional benefit.

Strength training and lifting through a full range of motion, however, can reduce injury risk by an impressive 69%. (Lauersen et al, 2014)

Training through full ranges of motion builds strength, resilience, and stability in your muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

A strong, mobile body is far better equipped to perform at its best and avoid injuries than simply being flexible.

❗How To Stay Injury Free in 2025 ❗

As 2025 begins, many of us commit to getting fit through running, gym workouts, or swimming. However jumping in too quickly often leads to injuries, making it hard to stick to our goals

Here or some tips to avoid unwanted injuries and setbacks

1. Ease Into It

Begin with shorter, less intense workouts and progressively increase both the intensity and duration over time. Aim to limit your weekly progression to a maximum of 10%, as this gradual approach minimises the risk of overloading your body and helps reduce the likelihood of injury

2. Set Realistic Goals

Start by setting small, realistic fitness goals that lay a strong foundation for long-term success. Gradual progression not only promotes consistent improvement but also helps you stay motivated and maintain focus on your journey

Success comes from consistency, not rushing!

3. Avoid Under-Fueling

Maintaining proper nutrition is essential for preventing injuries and supporting overall performance. Failing to fuel your body adequately can lead to weakened physical resilience, slower recovery times, and a higher risk of injury

Fuel well to perform and recover at your best!

4. Hydration

Proper hydration is key to maintaining optimal muscle function and joint health. Dehydration can cause fatigue, muscle cramps, and significantly increase the risk of injury, making it essential to prioritise fluid intake

Keep your body performing at its best by drinking plenty of water throughout the day!

5. Listen To Your Body

Listening to your body is essential for avoiding injuries. If you notice pain or fatigue, it's a sign to rest or adjust your training

Pushing through discomfort can lead to setbacks, so prioritise recovery when needed!

Osteoarthritis of The Knee 📢

What is Osteoarthritis (OA) of the Knee?

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, is a
degenerative condition, where the protective cartilage that cushions the joint wears
down and bony spurs develop

Common Symptoms of Osteoarthritis Include:

- Morning Stiffness lasting under 30minutes
- Pain With Movement/Increased Activity
- Clicking, Cracking or Crepitus
- Swelling & Reduced Movement
- Increased Pain in Cold & Damp Weather

Causes of Osteoarthritis Include:

- Ageing
- Obesity
- Previous Injuries
- Family History
- Increased Joint Stress

How Can Osteopathy Help?

Osteopathy uses a holistic approach to treatment, focusing on the full body rather than just the area of injury/pain. This ensures that any weakness elsewhere which could be contributing to pain are addressed.

Treatment involves manual therapy to increased joint movement, reduce swelling and provide pain relief. After manual therapy has been administered, a rehab plan focusing on movement and strengthening will be administered to aid with joint strength and stability

How To Avoid Hyrox Injuries 🏋🏼‍♂️

1. Gradual Loading

Gradual Loading is important because it allows your muscles, joints and connective tissue to adapt to the increased demands of Hyrox

2. Rest

Adequate rest is crucial when undertaking Hyrox as it allows your body to repair and strengthen, therefore reducing the risk of fatigue related injuries

3. Nutrition

Proper nutrition is essential when undertaking Hyrox because it fuels your body, maintains energy levels and aids in the building and repairing of muscular tissue

4. Proper Form

Performing exercises with proper technique and form is vital, as it ensures that exercises are perfromed safely and with minimal risk, therefore reducing unecessary strain on muscles and joints

5. Check For Areas Of Weakness

Common Hyrox Injuries 🏋🏼‍♂️

1. Muscle & Ligament Injuries

Overexertion during HYROX can cause
strains and sprains in the muscles and
ligaments, especially in the knees and
shoulders

2. Tendonitis

Due to the high demands of HYROX it is
Common to for the tendons to get inflamed
resulting in tendinitis. This often affects the Achilles (heel) and the Glute medius (hip) tendons

3. Shin Splints

Due to the high amount of running and
jumping involved in HYROX, it is common for
the muscles and tendons along the shin
bone (tibia) to become irritated

4. Back Pain

High demands, overloading and poor lifting
techniques can result in lower back pain. These are usually low grade muscle strains
and facet irritation, however more severe
injuries are possible, especially with
prolonged periods of overloading

5. Stress Fractures

Stress fractures, are small cracks in the
bone caused by overloading and repetitive
force to the area. They usually occur in weight bearing areas such as the legs and feet.

6. How Can We Help?

Here at ESM we will thoroughly assess
your injury, create a rehab plan and
provide manual treatment that suits
your needs

What is Tennis Elbow? 🎾

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis,
is a painful condition resulting from
inflammation of the tendons that join the
forearm muscles to the outside of the elbow.

It is often caused by repetitive motions of the wrist
and arm, such as those used in tennis and other
racquet sports, though it can occur from any
activity that strains these muscles. Other causes include aging, as tendons get weaker with age, and direct injury to the tendon.

If you are suffering from tennis elbow, it is best to decrease the load and repetitive movements through the wrist and elbow, trial cold/ice therapy to the joint and seek help from a healthcare professional.

If you would like to know more about tennis elbow, or how we can help, don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to help!
