About the walk
This route follows the River Thames from Staines to Shepperton, using well-established towpaths for a steady, riverside walk with plenty to see along the way. We’ll begin at Staines Station and join the Thames, heading downstream on a flat, accessible path that suits most walking abilities. The first stretch takes us past riverside homes, moorings and open water views as we make our way towards Laleham, with regular river activity — swans, ducks, rowers, pleasure boats — all common sights.
From there, we continue to Chertsey Meads, where the landscape widens into open meadow and sky. This section offers big river views and quieter corners along the bank. Nearing Shepperton Lock, the path narrows again, leading us through one of the most characterful parts of the Thames: working lock gates, footbridges, cottages and boats moving through.
The final leg brings us into Shepperton, just a short walk from cafés, pubs and transport links at the station — easy for onward travel or a relaxed finish over a drink or food. Trains run frequently back towards Staines and beyond.
