I first met Ivan Lyons at the Make a Difference Awards last year, where he won the Community Award. Our paths crossed again when we both met with local MP Helen McGuire to discuss our initiatives to support mental health in our local communities.
Ivan’s journey is both inspiring and heartbreaking. In 2020, his son Joe Lyons a successful, award-winning radio producer tragically took his own life after struggling during the lockdown period. Joe was a senior producer at Capital FM and played a key role in launching the Roman Kemp Breakfast Show, where he and Roman Kemp became close friends.
Determined to create a lasting legacy for Joe, Ivan, along with his wife and daughter, founded Joe’s Buddy Line, a charity based up the road in Leatherhead. The organisation works to promote mental health awareness and support, particularly among young people.
Joe’s Buddy Line focuses on creating a whole-school approach to mental health, providing free resources tailored to the specific needs of individual schools. These include innovative tools such as the Buddy Board, the Buddy Box, and a range of book resources, all designed to give children immediate information, advice, and support.
Roman Kemp, a trustee of Joe’s Buddy Line, further helped raise awareness by creating a BBC documentary about the mental health crisis facing young men in the UK.
Ivan’s dedication and strength continue to make a powerful difference in our community and beyond.
