Top Tip Tuesday 😊… Silence! 🤫 We’re not scared of it in our Sing and Sign classes and you shouldn’t be either! It’s actually a fun way to help your baby or toddler develop good listening and conversation skills.

😊 Try pausing in a song or game before something exciting happens. You can do it from any age for example…

For the youngest babies we love ‘Where is the noise?’ ‘Tickle on your Tum’ and ‘Can you at play peekaboo?’ 🎶

For slightly older babies, ‘Old MacDonald’, ‘Walking in the Jungle’ and ‘Looking through the window’ are great for listening out for funny animal and vehicle noises. 🐷🦁🚂

For energetic toddlers you can have great fun with ‘Walk and stop’ or ‘We can play the instruments’! 👣 🪇
..and of course at all ages we LOVE listening out for Jessie Cat during a game of peekaboo! 🐾

So have a go today taking a pause when maybe you wouldn’t have before and see how it can capture your baby’s attention. 🥰

Sing and Sign x

Top Tip Tuesday…… Babies learn about communication by exploring how other people respond to their sounds and body language and they’re motivated by any positive reactions. 🥰

💙 Your baby has likely been understanding your signing for a while now but their first attempts at signs may not look like the ones you use! For example, a baby may sign *more* by tapping one hand on the back of the other and some may even just clap to start with! 👏🏻

💛 Accuracy of hand-shape is not what’s important here - it’s the attempts to communicate that we want to celebrate and encourage! 🎉 If you think baby has used a sign in context, praise them by repeating the word and modelling the sign correctly 🫶🏻 Be consistent with the signs you use and baby’s hand-shape accuracy will come (just like with speech later on!)

💙 Don’t worry if baby is using one sign for more than one word… they now understand that they can get their message across with a sign… next step will be to refine their attempts and expand their messages 🥰

Remember to:
🌟PRAISE any attempts at signing
🌟accept any version of the sign
🌟consistently show them your version of the sign, so they can refine theirs..and share the joy you’ll both feel when they’ve communicated something new with you 💕 👏🥳

Ever wonder what helps little ones become confident, clear communicators? 💬

For so many families, the answer is Sing and Sign! 🐾

Signing doesn’t just boost language - it builds a strong foundation for understanding, connection and confidence. And the best part? It doesn’t stop when classes end. The songs, the signs, the shared memories… they often become a treasured part of daily life, years down the line. 🎶

It’s more than a class. It’s something that stays with you. 💞

Top Tip Tuesday 😁…. What does your baby love and engage with? ❤️ If you observe your little one closely you’ll see, just like us adults, there are things they are more drawn to than others.

🤩 If they’re excited by something, they’ll be more motivated to use the sign, so incorporate signs for those things into your baby signing as well as the signs that are most useful to you.😁

Using signs for animals 🐶🐷🦁🐵🦆🐸🐴, vehicles 🚙🚒🚲🚜✈️🚂 and people 👵👦👨‍🦳👶 can often really engage your baby and give them the tools to tell you what they’re excited about.

What signs does your baby use to tell you what they love? 😍

Tuesday’s Top Tip 😄….. At Sing and Sign, our aim is to encourage speech. 😊 We use signs to highlight key words in our spoken sentences and to help babies and toddlers make connections between words, objects, people and activities.
Remember to always say the word (or make the noise of the animal or vehicle) when you sign - never sign in silence.
You’ll probably notice that you start to emphasise the key word too as signing naturally slows your speech down around that word and that draws attention to it even more. 😁

Top Tip 😁….. Depending on where you live, most of you will have been to your first classes of the summer term by now or watched your first class classes. If you’re new to Sing and Sign, maybe you’re feeling excited about all the signs you’ve seen and are keen to use them. 😁 Or maybe you’re not sure where to start! 🤔

Or maybe you and your little one have been doing Sing and Sign classes for a term or two already and perhaps you’re now feeling tempted to use lots of signs together. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whatever your stage, • KEEP IT SIMPLE •

Our golden rule of one sign per spoken sentence will draw your baby’s attention to the most important word, helping them to understand more of what you’re saying and helping them to make connections between words, signs and their meaning. Remember baby signs are visual signposts for words 😊 Simplicity is key!

Why sign with my baby?

💡 Research on the use of infant signing has demonstrated that children who learn to sign during infancy have fewer tantrums (Acredolo & Goodwyn, 2002), better language skills as toddlers (Goodwyn & Acredolo, 2000), and improved social–emotional skills characterized by a more interactive relationship with parents and caregivers (Moore, Acredolo, & Goodwyn, 2001; Vallotton, 2012a, 2012b).
