If you have a lump on your wrist or hand, it could be that you have a ganglion cyst. Ganglion cysts are fluid filled lumps, often found near a joint or tendon, and are commonly found around the wrist and hand. Ultrasound can diagnose a ganglion cyst.
Ganglion cysts are harmless lumps and do not necessarily require treatment; some often shrink in size and resolve on their own in time.
However, some ganglion cysts can cause pain, interfere with joint movement and be unsightly if large. In these cases, ultrasound guided aspiration can be performed to drain the fluid from the ganglion cyst. A needle is first used to numb the area around the cyst followed aspiration of the fluid using a needle and syringe. Sometimes a steroid injection can also be given at the same time to help reduce inflammation and pain.
