Movember
As we are reaching the end of November, let’s not forget Movember – a reminder to men to look out and speak up about their health.

Prostate health – ranging from erectile dysfunction, benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis and prostate cancer. Always get checked by your GP as the first instance.

Earlier this year, I attended an acupuncture course looking at treating prostate health and flow issues. Acupuncture can work well for treating urinary frequency, urgency, hesitancy, nocturia, incomplete evacuation, terminal dribbling.

Key take outs from the prostate health course for me was:
- Using acupuncture points on the medial thigh as local treatment for prostate health
- Needling REN3 to achieve warmth sensation around the bladder
- Using acupuncture points on the heel of the foot for distal treatment

Lucy Beaumont recently revealed she was diagnosed with ADHD. Taking part in The Great British Bake Off, she noticed her chaotic baking style made her see a therapist which later led to her having a ADHD assessment.

She said ‘it was “interesting being 40 and suddenly understanding a part of yourself when previously you’ve just thought you were a little bit unhinged… It means your brain doesn’t want you to organise things... For some reason, it doesn’t want to make life easy for you. I’ll get from A to B but I’ll exhaust myself doing it.”

COVID jabs are available at the moment for those considered vulnerable by the NHS. Acupuncture can be a great way to complement the COVID vaccine, or even if you suffer from chronic poor immunity.

Acupuncture also works wonders for boosting your immunity, shortening any flu you may catch during this time of the year.
Acupoints that may help with boosting immunity include:
GB20, SJ5, LI4, LU7 – these acupoints are great for expelling as the first line of defence
REN12, ST36, SP6, LU1, KID3 – these acupoints are great for the 2nd line of defence if the virus gets deeper into the body.

Endometriosis is where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other parts of the body. It is often found in areas around the womb, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and lining of the pelvis, but can also affect organs such as the bladder, bowel and chest.

Symptoms happen when patches of endometriosis break down and bleed but cannot leave your body.

Pain, fatigue and heavy menstrual bleed can be symptoms of endometriosis, which can affect fertility and mood.

Acupuncture can be effective for managing endometriosis.
Some acupoints can include:

LIV3, LI4 – to move qi and blood
SP10, BL40 – to dispel blood stasis
Ba liao points in the sacrum – regulates the pelvic floor

Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage that affects the peripheral nervous system causing symptoms like numbness, tingling, burning pain and muscle weakness in the hands and feet.

Acupuncture can help bring sensation back, reduce pain and improve muscle weakness in the hands and feet.

Some acupoints that can help with peripheral neuropathy include:
SP4, PC6 - these points are part of the Chong mai that helps with blood circulation to the peripheral nerves
LIV3 - Liver is important for blood circulation
LU9 - the Lungs help to bring fresh oxygen and take away toxins from our blood supply to the nerves
KID3 - The kidneys / bone marrow help to reproduce fresh blood cells

Placenta previa is a condition where the placenta attaches low in the uterus and partially or completely covers the cervix. The most common symptom is vaginal bleeding in the third trimester.

Treatment usually includes careful monitoring, bed rest, and minimising physical activity. If the placenta fully covers the cervix or heavy bleeding occurs, a Cesarean section is the safest way to deliver the baby.

Acupuncture can support mamas with placenta previa to minimise the risk of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy.

Acupoints to support yang and spleen qi will be important, such as DU20, KID7, KID3, SP3, SP4.
Moxa can also be used to add support yang qi.
Ensuring mamas are having yang boosting foods such as bone broth, hot foods and drinks, wearing socks and staying warm are important to support yang qi to lift and support the placenta.

Immunity
Covid, norovirus? Now is the season for colds and flus. Acupuncture can help to boost immunity to keep colds and flus at bay.

I like to use Yang points to boost the defensive qi as a first line of defence such as SJ5, LI4, SI3, BL66, GB20, DU14.
Our lungs are also our first line of defence for fighting colds and flus, so I like to use Lung points such as LU7, LU9, LU1.
Our gut health is also important when it comes to our immunity, so I like to use points such as ST36, SP6, SP3 to boost gut health.

REN7 is a great point for fertility, gynaecological issues, menopause and urinary issues.

It is known as the intersection of yin - where the conception vessel, penetrating vessel and kidney vessel converge and meet.

I like using this point in Autumn/Winter months as it’s a very yin and nourishing point, without having to expose a patient’s naval too much in the cold weather.
