💬 Talking about dying changed everything.

Ahead of Dying Matters Week, our Compassionate Neighbour volunteer Erika shared how open conversations helped her support the people she loved most. 💛

When Erika’s twin brother Tom was diagnosed with cancer, she visited him every Friday, bringing home-cooked meals, while he also attended a local day hospice once a week. After one of those sessions, Tom mentioned that the group had spoken a little about dying, a simple comment that opened the door to an important conversation.

“We talked over coffee and it was very relaxed.”

🩵In that moment, Tom shared what mattered most: to be at home, not be alone, and be buried near their mum.

Because they talked, Erika was able to make it all happen. “Knowing what Tom wanted removed all the uncertainty. It was incredibly helpful.”

Years later, she did the same for her friend Beryl, honouring her wishes with a tea party and scattering her ashes over The Solent.

These conversations aren’t easy, but they matter. This Dying Matters Week, start the conversation with someone you love. 💬

April in the community: a month of connection 🌿

It has been a busy and heart-warming month for our outreach team! We’ve been out and about across the boroughs of Kingston and Richmond, meeting the wonderful people who make our community so special.

We’ve been to:
📍 New Malden & Chessington, visiting the local Food Banks at Chessington Impact Centre and New Malden Baptist Church to see the vital support services in action.
📍 Richmond & Ham, meeting the Catholic Women's League and the Richmond EAL Friendship Group to discuss how hospice care can support everyone, regardless of language or background.
📍 Twickenham: A huge well done to our Outreach Coordinator, Shona, for leading her very first TLC (Talk Listen Connect) session at the ETNA Centre!
📍Kingston, meeting with the KUCare team (including furry friends) at Kingston University to explore new ways to support students and staff.
