🏳️⚧️ Today marks Trans Day of Remembrance.
This day honours trans people taken from us by blind, hateful violence simply for being who they are.
Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a black transgender woman murdered in 1998.
The fight for equality remains. Trans Europe and Central Asia (TGEU) reported 281 murders of trans people between Oct 1 2024 and Sep 30 2025. Most victims did not see their 40th birthday, and 90% of reported murders were femicides. There has also been a concerning rise in the targeted killing of activists and movement leaders.
Today, as the community reflects on these unacceptable statistics, we’re lending an unapologetic voice of support. Trans people continue to face a disproportionate threat of murder, violence, homelessness, underrepresentation and political persecution.
🕯 Tonight, from 7:30pm to 9pm, Derbyshire LGBT+ will hold a commemorative vigil at its Chesterfield Community Centre, 51 Rutland Road, S40 1ND. Directions and parking info can be found here: https://orlo.uk/GBJvG

As we remember, let’s also honour the efforts of courageous people at home and around the world still working to ensure the safety and equality of trans and gender diverse people everywhere. Let’s help create a world where everyone can live freely as their true selves.
