So after a few years break, I find myself delving once again into the deliciously transcendental art of Indian Head Massage đ. Feeling a calling to reintegrate it back into my practice and offerings, I'll now share a little information on this deeply restorative and nourishing healing modality. đ«
What is Indian Head Massage?
The foundations of Indian head massage can be traced back thousands of years to the venerable tradition of Ayurveda â a holistic system that emphasises balance and harmony between the body, mind, and spirit. In Ayurveda, the head is considered to be a vital energy centre, housing the crown chakra or "Sahasrara," which is believed to influence consciousness and spiritual connection.
Indian head massage involves a combination of massage techniques that are applied across the upper back, head, neck and shoulders. It can be done with or without oils. Techniques include kneading, tapping (stimulating nerve endings and awakening dormant energies), friction rubbing (small circular rubbing motions), compression with fingertips and stretching (upper back muscles and neck). It is carried out with the recipient comfortably seated and fully clothed but with bare shoulders (vest tops for women are ideal).
