It's very tempting when the weather is cold and miserable to stay home where it is warm and cosy - but it can also be very isolating. The colder months can have a very damaging effect on our mental health if we are not careful. Reach out to friends, wrap up warm and meet for a coffee or go for a walk. There are lots of local groups where you can get together with people as well - your local Library will have information - why not go to the library, grab a book and find out what's available. Don't let winter shut you away.

Fire Safety is always important and more so in winter when we often have extra appliances such as heaters and electric blankets running. Most home fires are preventable by sensible precautions. The Fire Service runs a Safe and Well programme where they will come and check your home to ensure your safety and well being. You may qualify for a free visit and free smoke alarms - at no time will you be sold anything. To find out more go to the Fire Service Website or call 08003895525 free of charge

Safe and Well visits are an important part of our prevention activity. They enable us to advise and educate on safety at home, with a particular focus on our most vulnerable residents.

Heading into Autumn and Winter is a time when we need to think about maintaining our wellbeing and staying healthy, especially with all the viruses currently affecting our health. One of the most important things you can do to help yourself is make sure you get enough sleep. Even in retirement we tend to have busy lives and there are always screens of one sort or another demaning our attention. If you can you should aim for 7 - 8 hours sleep. Whilst your body can get by on less - it is 'getting by'! Getting enough sleep gives your body time to repair and recuperate from the day and helps your brain maintain your mental health.

It's Zero Waste Week - and keeping waste down helps keep bills down too. Did you know that more than 4 million potatoes are thrown away every day in the UK? Most of them are fine to eat, they might need a little trimming but that's all. If your spuds are a bit wrinkled, just put them, or any slightly soft veges, into a bowl of cool water for an hour or two and they will be good as new. More than 26 million slices of bread are binned every day - bread that is a little past it's best can be made into breadcrumbs and frozen for all kinds of uses, croutons are easy to make if you have the oven on for something else and toasties are best with older bread - even a bread and butter pudd. Best tip of all is to buy just what you need, when you need it.
