Proprioceptive Sensory Activity: The Sausage Roll
We use alot of movement in our sessions. The sausage roll soon became a hot dog which we had to put ketchup, mustard and gerkins on 😂
The sausage roll is a simple sensory activity often used to support children who benefit from proprioceptive input.
Proprioception is our body’s sense of where we are in space and how our muscles and joints move and work together. Many children, including autistic children, benefit from activities that provide deep pressure and “heavy work” to help regulate their nervous system.
Why it can help:
⭐️ Provides deep pressure to muscles and joints
⭐️ Supports body awareness
⭐️ Can help calm and regulate the nervous system
⭐️ Helps some children feel more ready to focus and learn
This is one of the developmental play strategies I learned through training with an Occupational Therapist, focusing on supporting children’s sensory regulation, motor skills, and overall development through play.
Disclaimer - Always check the child is comfortable and happy to take part, and ensure their head and breathing are clear.
Sometimes the simplest activities can make a big difference in helping children feel regulated, safe, and ready to learn.
