Navigating challenges with compassion 🦁

When we're really struggling with something, like getting an assignment done, having a tricky conversation, or getting through a tough sports race, we can choose to offer ourselves both support AND challenge.

Being more self-compassionate involves turning towards the difficult things and responding actively. We connect with the challenging bits and find a way through with a supportive inner voice and step back from those negative thoughts. We show up with emotional courage and can become our own compassionate cheerleader πŸŽ‰

I had plenty of opportunities to practice these skills recently when cycling up Monte Zoncolan! It was both brutal and brilliant.

🧠🧠🧠 How can you show yourself some self-compassion when you're struggling?

🦁 Connecting with your inner warrior 🦁

Imagine developing an internal voice that is motivated by courage, curiosity, and clarity. The part of you that recognises the downsides to being self-critical and hard on ourselves and acknowledges the usefulness of connecting with resilience, strength, and compassion.

➑️ TRY THIS:

πŸ’› Think back to a time when someone else showed you compassion. What qualities made them compassionate? How did they express their support, and how did this leave you feeling?

πŸ’› Consider how you might embody and internalise these qualities to help shape your own inner warrior. How can you offer yourself a similar level of support in the future?

Last month, I was invited to facilitate a workshop exploring resilience and wellbeing for post graduates studying at the Business School.

There were some really rich discussions on these themes including how we find determination to keep going in the face of challenge, how we communicate our needs to those around us, and the importance of non-work activities, sleep, rest, and connection.

Huge thanks to everyone who joined the session and engaged with the topics in such a thoughtful and open way πŸ™πŸ»

πŸ’ Becoming more self-compassionate can sometimes involve challenging fears and beliefs about what this means: we might think that being compassionate is self-indulgent, a bit fluffy, or taking the easy road.

This really isn't how compassion works!

Learning to be compassionate involves offering ourselves both support and challenge to navigate difficulties. We turn towards difficult things and encourage ourselves to find a way through with strength, wisdom, and courage 🦁

🌱 Sunny springtime staff day 🌱

Recently, I was invited to facilitate a stretching, mindfulness & relaxation session for the staff at the University of Exeter Students' Guild. This formed part of the team away day and offered opportunities to focus on wellbeing and take time out together away from work.

I received some lovely feedback from people in the group about the adaptability and accessibility of the practices in the session.

Thanks so much to everyone who joined the session and to the people who worked hard behind the scenes in setting up the day of activities πŸ™πŸ»

❔️ Do you & your team have an away day or staff wellbeing event coming up soon?

πŸ’ We can all get caught up in thinking negatively of ourselves when we're struggling. Our thinking can take a harsh tone, and we might be self-critical or have fears about ourselves and how others might perceive us.

πŸ’› Maybe we can interrupt this internal chatter and recognise that it is our human brains generating these thoughts.
πŸ’› We might remind ourselves that thoughts are not facts and that other perspectives and possibilities are also valid and helpful.Β
πŸ’› We could acknowledge our strengths and positive qualities to consider how we are trying our best to navigate life's challenges.Β
πŸ’› Maybe we can talk to ourselves as we'd talk to a good friend and offer ourselves the same level of encouragement and support.
πŸ’› We can train our minds to respond differently to help us feel more balanced.

t a k i n g t i m e o u t ✨️

It's the fourth year of offering wellbeing-focused yoga classes to staff at the university, and today we are exploring twisting, loosening, and releasing with practices for the body and mind.

It's a real joy and privilege to be invited back to your workplace to offer a moment to move, pause, and reset during the working day.

See you all soon! πŸ™πŸ»

THANK YOU to everyone who joined the psychology & yoga workshop at the weekend 🫢🏻

There were thought-provoking discussions about wellbeing, including the role of culture and context in shaping our responses. We reflected on the individual wellbeing paths we are each on and how self-awareness and self-regulation both support us in learning how to respond to triggers helpfully.

The workshop offered opportunities to experience wellbeing practices, including bodywork, self-study, psychological theory, breathwork, and guided relaxation.Β Β
