Flames can engulf a whole house in minutes, starting as an accident and becoming a disaster in almost no time at all.

Time for another fire experiment...🔥

The desktop gas aquarium is a great tool for exploring fire behaviour and is just one of the many practical ways we explore fire phenomena. In this example, we are exploring backdraught and fire gas ignition, and discussing why reaction sizes vary with the ratio of gas to air in compartments.

This demonstration was part of our SFJ Award
Compartment Fire Behaviour Training Instructor (CFBTI) training.

The course teaches you how fire behaves in different environments and scenarios, plus the methods firefighters use to prevent and deal with fire development within a compartment, crucial for anyone pursuing this as a career.

How long does a backdraught take? 👀

Let's time it to see how many seconds it will take for this fireball to burst out of this shed once the hatches are opened... 🔥

A backdraught is a ventilation induced event that occurs when a fire deprived of oxygen (such as this one in a compartment) is exposed to a larger amount of oxygen (when the door opens).
