📣Day 10 is all about Nighttime economy and street harassment. 📣

We all deserve to feel safe at night, whether we’re on a night out or walking home.

While this theme highlights the risks women still face from street and nighttime harassment, it is important to note that most sexual assaults and r**es happen in people's own homes by partners or ex-partners (2 in 5), or people known to victim-survivors (6 in 7).

This short video developed by Devon & Cornwall Police gives an overview of Project Nighteye, that aims to prevent sexual and other crimes by proactively identifying predatory sexual behaviour and intervening to prevent this escalating to an offence: Project Nighteye Animation - what is it, how to support and report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CH3Lim2JjA&t=5s

Support is available if you have experienced sexual harassment, violence or abuse:

Devon RCSAS: Devon R**e Crisis and Sexual Abuse Services – We offer confidential, professional support to survivors or r**e, sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse in Devon: https://devonr**ecrisis.org.uk/

Independent Sexual Violence Advisor Service: The Bridge Project South West: https://bridgeprojectsw.org.uk/

Exeter University: Sexual violence | Wellbeing Services in Devon: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/students/wellbeing/devon/resources/sexualviolence/

Our theme event for TODAY is the Reclaim the Night march in Barnstaple. This is a free, family friendly event starting with the badge-making workshop in the library from 4pm and then the march from the Square, Barnstaple from 5pm.

An additional event for TODAY is online J9 Domestic Abuse Initiative UK - Creating Safe Spaces in the community. 📣For day six we are thinking about Domestic Abuse Later in Life. 📣

Domestic abuse can happen at any age. Older people are just as likely to experience harm from domestic abuse as younger people but are much less likely to seek support.

Older people can face additional barriers to accessing support, including not knowing what support is available and professionals focusing on factors like 'carer stress' or dementia, which can lead to a misclassification of the abuse and a lack of involvement from specialist domestic abuse services.

In Devon, reports of abuse and referrals for support from people aged 60 years and over are increasing. Devon Domestic Abuse Alliance https://ddaa.org.uk is available to all, with tailored resources to help improve safety and support options for anyone over 60.

A peninsula project (Devon, Torbay, Plymouth and Cornwall) focused on better understanding the needs and experiences of older victim-survivors of domestic abuse took place in 2024-2025. Some of the resources developed through the project are available here: https://safercornwall.co.uk/domestic_abuse_resources/

Here is a pre-recording of the Older People’s Project outcomes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPYYqQt30l4&feature=youtu.be

Further developments based on the project recommendations will be rolled out over the coming year, including training and an Older People’s Charter. If your service or organisation is interested in finding out more on how you can recognise the importance and value of older people who are at risk of, are experiencing or have experienced Domestic Abuse, Sexual Abuse or Violence, get in touch with amy.callebaut@devon.gov.uk

About us

In 2016 three of us, Julia, Michelle & Jeanette got together, recognising a gap in provision and started More Positive Me, combining our skills & knowledge. Our aim is to empower targets of abuse and create a long term support plan to embed the learning from pattern changing courses, and create a space where peer support could develop and creating new patterns. Michelle’s husband joined as Director too as financial Director. In doing this we created our own 4 day course called Changing Patterns For A More Positive Me, bringing these sessions right up to date incorporating modern technology & NLP. Our results have been fantastic, our feedback outstanding and our retention rates amazing.

In March Michelle & Alan stepped down from the company. Jeanette & Julia decided to continue and recruited our first volunteer. In 2018 we decided to make More Positive Me dormant when life got in the way for us both. Julia stepped down and Jeanette carried on for a while on her own, working in collaboration with Splitz to create Rediscovering You, A Self Care Tool Kit.

In December 2019 Debbie Coleiro joined More Positive Me as a director. We can’t wait to see what 2020 brings.
