At Budlake...Next week our story is called Elmer and Wilbur by David Mckee, our words of the week is pattern and our sign is Rainbow. In the small world area, we will be exploring an Elmer colour sorting with multicoloured pasta, pom poms, Elmer elephants, tweezers and coloured bowls. We will be using and strengthening our fine motor skills by using the tweezers in a pincer grasp to separate the colours into different bowls. In the creative area we will be doing some rainbow collaging with tissue paper, sequins and other resources. We will be talking all about the different colours we are using whilst making our collages and begin to identify any patterns we can see. In the garden next week, we will be using paint to mix and make colours, we will be experimenting with making different colours and noticing what happens when we mix two different colours together.

This week our story was don’t let an elephant on the bus, we loved exploring the city and animals’ tuff tray pretending our animals were riding the bus and pushing our cars along the road re-enacting our story. We also loved looking out for the rhyming words in our story and would identify these during group times. We have loved taking part in board games and puzzles this week and have been building on our turn taking and sharing skills whilst taking part in these activities. The home corner has also been popular and we have loved looking after the dolls, making cups of tea and playing with small groups of friends.

At Whipton....Next week we’ll be getting stuck into a brand‑new story adventure as we delve into Dazzling Diggers! Our focus number will be 4, and throughout the week we’ll be introducing transport‑themed Makaton signs, including car, train, bus, and aeroplane.

Our play invitations will revolve around the busy world of building and vehicles. Children will explore matching different machines to the tasks they’re used for, sorting construction vehicles by colour and size, and arranging ramps, planks, and tracks in order from shortest to longest. They’ll also be crafting their own “Dazzling Digger” characters using craft sticks, bright card, wheels made from bottle tops, and googly eyes, as well as designing their own construction passes decorated with their favourite vehicles.

In the tuff tray we’ll be creating a mini construction zone, complete with sand, stones, pipes, diggers, and road signs. Children can experiment with digging, pouring, transporting, and building, designing their own work sites and developing imaginative stories as they play.

Out on the decking we’ll be heading off on transport‑spotting adventures, keeping our eyes and ears open for different vehicles in the environment. We’ll also gather natural materials to build bridges, tunnels, and roadways, and set up large‑scale construction play using crates, blocks, and fabric to encourage climbing, balancing, teamwork, and big imaginative ideas.

During Focus Time, our preschoolers will dive into vehicle‑themed creative projects. They’ll be making transport puppets, designing construction scenes, and practising early maths by matching numbers, shapes, and colours, and grouping vehicles in different ways. We’ll also explore movement by copying how different vehicles travel — zooming like cars, chugging like trains, gliding like aeroplanes, and rumbling like buses.

This week we have loved learning all about the book All Aboard the Animal Train! The children have enjoyed matching animals to their carriages, sorting creatures by size and colour, and ordering train tracks from shortest to longest. Our animal‑themed crafts, including creating their own Animal Train characters and designing

At Bovey...Next week at Bovey our story of the week is ‘ The colour monster’ and our number is going to be 4.

During the week we are going to be spending a lot of time exploring colours. We are going to be using our fine motor skills in our multi coloured rice tuff tray. We are going to be using a range of equipment to help promote our fine and gross motor skills to pour, scoop and sieve the rice. While exploring our tuff tray we can talk about all the colours that we can see, we can see if the colours link to any emotions for us. We are also going to be exploring the story while playing in our tuff tray by using story props and pictures. In our creative area we are going to be exploring colour by using paint. We are going to be creating our own beautiful pictures deciding what colours we would like to use and we can also explore colour mixing by mixing our paint together and seeing what colour it changes to.  We are also going to be using lots of different materials to add texture to our pictures, such as tissue paper, pom poms, feathers and foil.

Outside in the garden we are going to be painting with water colours and playing with our colourful sand using it to explore and encourage us to ask questions. we are also going to be talking a lot about our feelings and what might make us feel a certain way.

During our focus time we are going to have the chance to take part in activities such as drawing emotions, we are going to be using mirrors to look at ourselves and we can pull faces into them to see how our faces change. We are also going to be taking part in more colour mixing activities, by painting our hands and then shaking our hands with our friends to see what colours we can make.

This week we have really enjoyed our story ‘dear zoo’ we have spent so much time pretending to be different animals, thinking about how they move or what noises they might make. We have had lots of fun exploring in our animal tuff tray. It was filled with hay and sawdust and we have been building different enclosures for the different animals thinking about what they might like in their houses. During music and movement the traffic light game was our favourite activity.

At Whipton....Next week we will be climbing aboard a brand‑new adventure as we explore the story All Aboard the Animal Train! Our number of the week will be 3, and we’ll be learning a variety of animal Makaton signs, Elephant, Tiger, Rhino etc.

Our invitations to play will be inspired by the animals on the train. We’ll be matching animals to their carriages, sorting creatures by size and colour, and ordering train tracks from shortest to longest. Children will also be creating their own “Animal Train” characters using craft sticks, coloured card, and googly eyes, as well as designing train tickets decorated with the animals they love most.

In the tuff tray we will set up a railway‑themed sensory tray with tracks, stones, shredded paper “straw,” and small world animals. Children can explore building their own train routes, creating habitats for the animals, and engaging in rich storytelling and role play.

Out on the decking we’ll be going on animal‑spotting walks, collecting natural materials to build dens, nests, and tunnels for our creatures. We’ll also be creating large‑scale train play scenes and building “animal carriages” with blocks and cloths to inspire climbing, balancing, and collaborative play.

During Focus Time our preschoolers will be diving into their animal‑themed crafts. We’ll be making animal puppets, designing train scenes, and practising maths skills by matching numbers, shapes and colours, and sorting animals into groups. Children will also explore movement by copying how different animals travel—stomping like elephants, padding like bears, or slithering like snakes.

This week we have loved learning all about Frog on a Log! The children have enjoyed exploring rhyming words, playing with sound patterns, and discovering the life cycle of a frog. Our pond‑themed activities have sparked wonderful conversations about growth, change, and the natural world, and the children have shown great enthusiasm in their imaginative frog play.

At Budlake....Next week our story is called You can’t take an elephant on the bus by Patricia Cleveland Pack. In the small world we will be exploring a jungle animal in the city using the magnet tiles road with cars and the jungle animals just like in our story. We will be acting out the story in our play and recalling the parts we know whilst using the book to help us. In the mark making we will be using the cars in paint to make marks on large pieces of paper. We will be pushing the cars back and forth and looking at the patterns that the wheels make as we roll them. In the garden next week, we will be using the large wooden blocks to make ramps for the cars. We will be talking about how fast or slow the cars go down the ramps and using mathematical language of size when exploring the cars.

Next week for letters and sounds we will be taking part in activities such as actions songs and Roly poly, this is where we roll our arms fast and slow to the tune Roly poly ever so slowly Roly poly faster. We will also be describing words about sounds and playing noisy neighbour.

This week our story was called a squash and a squeeze, we loved learning all about the different animals on the farm and learning which of our foods came from the farm such as vegetables and meat. In the mark making we enjoyed using vegetables in paint to make prints on paper using matching colours to the vegetables for example orange for carrots. We enjoyed exploring a small world farm with all of the farm yard animals, barn and straw,

At Bovey....Next week at Bovey our story for the week is going to be Dear Zoo and our number of the week is going to be 3. During the week we are going to be exploring in our animal themed tuff tray. We are going to be using our exploratory skills to see if we can find the animals hidden in all the hay and tissue paper. We are then going to be talking about the different animals that we find,  thinking about where they might live, what noises they make and looking at the patterns on their skin/fur. In our creative area we are going to be using animals to paint. Finding out what prints it may leave on the paper if we use their feet to stamp our paint. Outside in the garden we are going to be making marks in the sand using animals from our story. We are also going to be using our fine motor skills to see if we can copy the patterns on our animals by drawing them into the sand with our fingers. We are also going to using the Duplo blocks to build different houses for our animals, we can talk about all the different colours, sizes and shapes of our blocks that we are using.

During music and movement, we are going to be moving in a variety of ways while pretending to be animals. Thinking about how fast or slow the animals may be and if the animal has big or small movements. Our focus time activities this week are going to include practicing our scissor skills, matching the animals and making our own animal puzzles.

This week at Bovey our story has been ‘A duck so small’. We have really enjoyed using a range of resources to make and decorate our own ducks. We have had lots of fun in our duck pond tuff tray, using our senses to feel all the different textures within our tray. Outside in our garden we have been playing with the water, pretending to be ducks.

At Honiton....Next week, we are going to be learning about nature. We will be using the book

Superworm to base our learning on. Our number of the week is 3 and our word of the week is worm. During our cube times we are going to talk about nature in our world around us and how nature is so important to us. We will be continuing to talk about days of the week in our focussed time, using the words yesterday, today and tomorrow. Our activities will include building a bug hotel to develop our gross motor skills. We will also be developing our mark making skills by drawing wiggly worms and squiggly mud patterns. In our outdoor area we will become nature explorers and use our role play equipment to look out for nature in our garden area.

Last week, we learnt about snow and ice. We read the Gruffalo’s Child as our book. Our number of the week was 2 and our word of the week was cold. During our cube times we talked about snow and ice and the types of weather that we see in the winter months. We also talked about hibernation and how some animals like to sleep in the colder months. We learnt about days of the week in our focussed time, using the words yesterday, today and tomorrow. Our activities included making our own footprints in the snow pictures while naming different colours. We also used the building blocks to build a safe place for the Gruffalo’s child to hide from the big bad mouse, this supported our manipulation and control skills. In our outdoor area we had water, ice, sticks and crunchy leaves so we could explore what the weather does to our world in the colder months.

At Whipton....Next week in the Baby Room, our story of the week will be “Dear Zoo” and we will be practicing a handful of animal Makaton signs, such as ‘lion’ and ‘giraffe.’ In our tuff tray, we will be exploring the animals in gloop, stomping the animals around to get them messy and mucky, then giving them a good scrub after! We will be singing “Animal Fair” and “Leo the Lion” while playing our instruments, and using simple descriptive vocabulary such as “big” and “small” to support our babies’ expanding vocabulary!

This week, we have loved singing ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’ at Introduction, taking the Velcro frog pictures off one by one as we sang, and making them splash in the pool! We explored a variety of textures in the sensory tray, playing Peek-a-Boo with the green tulle and shredded paper, and squishing the crazy foam with our hands and feet. We also strengthened our finger muscles and developed our fine motor skills by squishing, splatting and rolling the playdough.

Outside we will be practising how small and big we can stretch our bodies!

During music and movement, we will be doing action songs and yoga.

And for focus time, there will be lots of puzzles, hand – eye co-ordination activities and light sensory play.

This week we have been reading ‘zog and the flying doctors’ and our number has been 1. We have enjoyed lots of discussions around doctors and how they can help us. We have also dressed up like doctors and princesses like in the story! We have also been practising our scissor skills and gluing!
