While many of us spend Christmas surrounded by loved ones, thousands of seafarers mark the holiday far from home. From those working on cruise ships, doing their very best to ensure their customers have the trip of a lifetime, to those in the commercial shipping sector keeping global trade moving – without them, our festive shelves would look very different.
We understand that being away from home at Christmas can stir up all sorts of feelings and it's completely normal to feel a little disconnected and even homesick at this time of year. If you’re working at sea over this festive season, here are five simple ways to make it feel a bit gentler…
1. Stay connected to your people:
If your vessel has internet access, set up a call or send a message home. Even a quick chat can lift your spirits. No WiFi? Flip through saved photos or videos — small moments from home can ground you more than you think.
2. Share a little festive spirit with your crew:
You’re probably not the only one missing something. A few decorations, a shared meal, a carol, a prayer, or even just swapping stories from home can make the day feel more human and less like “just another shift.”
3. Or take the day low-key if that’s what you need:
If you’re not in the mood, that’s completely okay. Offer your crewmates a friendly greeting, then carve out some quiet time - your wellbeing comes first.
4. Give yourself a post-voyage celebration to look forward to for when you’re back on shore: a big dinner, a small gathering, or a cosy night in. Having something on the horizon always helps.
5. Take it easy with social media:
Send your festive messages, then put your phone down. Scrolling through everyone else’s Christmas photos can make the distance feel sharper, not softer.
Remember... There’s no “right” way to feel during the holidays at sea, and if you are struggling don’t hesitate to reach out — whether to a colleague or supervisor, or drop us a message and we can signpost you towards free and confidential welfare organisations.
