STRESS!
what can we do to alleviate stress?
Practice mindfulness
Focusing on the simple act of merely being in the present moment can allow us to step out of the mind and reconnect with our bodies allowing our senses to be the focal point, not our thoughts. Meeting the bodyโs basic needs is the best way to regulate the nervous system. Do you need a wee? Are you hungry? Are you thirsty? Do you need to move?
Deep breathing
Short, shallow breaths can heighten stress and trigger physical responses in the body forcing it to go into fight or flight mode. Using the 5/7 method you can lower heart rate and help rebalance the nervous system more into the PSNS (rest and digest). Breathing in for 5 counts and out for 7 counts.
Prioritise sleep
Sleep plays a fundamental role in our emotional, mental and physical well-being and by creating a calm sleep environment you will help your mind switch off from the day, allowing your body to fully relax into a deep slumber.
Spend time in nature
Spending just 20 minutes in nature has been known to significantly reduce your levels of cortisol. Whether it is going for a walk or simply opting to eat your lunch outside, nature can help improve your mood, relieve stress and anxiety and boost feelings of happiness.
Move your body
Moving your body releases feel-good endorphins and therefore, helps relieve stress and tension. From walking or jogging to swimming or cycling, find out what you enjoy and begin to incorporate daily movement into your routine.
Connect with someone
Connecting with others can help to improve your mood, become more resilient and in turn, reduce stress. Check in with your support network or join a community group to connect with someone new and remember a problem shared, is a problem halved.
