Very excited to announce that I've booked my training in Neutrigenomics, unravelling nutritional aspects of our DNA starting in January.

I'm going to be studying Nutrient Core, Methylation, Histamine, Nervous System, and Hormones and Detoxification.

I'll be taking the test myself and learning lots about my own health processes as I go.

Time to start taking the fish oil regularly to get my brain oiled I reckon! 🤣😊🥸🤩

I'll be talking more about this in a talk on heart health at Budleigh library in the autumn.

Eggs lower cholesterol.

That’s right. A study just published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition [https://bit.ly/45dCF4C] finds that eating two eggs a day LOWERS LDL cholesterol, if in a diet not high in saturated fat. The study compared different diets and the diet high in saturated fat did raise LDL cholesterol.

Those who have followed my writings will know that, since my fist book in 1981, I have told the truth about eggs: a) they never raise cholesterol, nor heart disease risk – in fact they lower it and b) that cholesterol isn’t the problem in the first place. I have a whole chapter on this in my book Say No to Heart Disease.

Heart disease is a ‘disease’. High cholesterol is not. While high LDL cholesterol is associated, weakly, with more cardiovascular disease, if above about 7mmol/l, this is more because of the things that raise LDL cholesterol, namely a high sugar/carb diet and low vitamin C, than cholesterol\s ‘fault’. The old rule was you’re Ok if your cholesterol is below 6. Some would say 7. But, in order to sell statins, this was changed to 5.2mmol/l, for which the evidence is lacking.

The other main problem is that what’s measured as ‘LDL cholesterol’ includes Lipoprotein(a). It is part of that low density lipoprotein family. Lp(a) goes up when vitamin C goes down. In a perfect world you’d also be told how much of that LDL cholesterol is Lp(a).

Much more important, and always measured, is your triglyceride level. This fat in the blood is created when you eat too much sugar and carbs and/or alcohol. If your level is below 1mmol/l, and your HDL is high (above 1.6mmol/l) you really have nothing to worry about, regardless of your LDL cholesterol level. Best of all is your triglyceride/HDL ratio. If this is 2 or less, eg you have no more than twice the triglycerides to HDL, your risk of cardiovascular disease is minimal.

None of this has anything to do with eggs. Do read my book Say No to Heart Disease [https://www.holfordnutrition.com/product/say-no-to-heart-disease-patrick-holford/] to get the full story. By the way, your homocysteine level predicts two thirds of heart attacks in older people and many who have heart attacks have ‘normal’ cholesterol. Don’t trust your doctor is they use the QRisk calculator from NICE, putting in your age and your cholesterol level to basically sell you statins. They do, reliably, lower cholesterol, but are remarkably ineffective in reducing heart disease risk in those, as above, not actually at risk.

Very seaweedy down the beach this morning 😲. No good for eating when it's piled up on the beach but if picked while still growing seaweed is rich in selenium and iodine, beneficial for the thyroid and for healing the gut.

In Chinese medicine it has very cooling properties so good to eat in summer or for inflammation.

I soak in clean water, rinse well and store in the freezer to use in soups and stir fries. 😊

I love my job. I learn something new all the time. I'm very interested in the role of vitamin A in lots of problems. I was researching the links between vitamin A and diabetic retinopathy for a talk I'm giving on Thursday and came across this article.

Many of are lacking vitamin A as it's only available in animal foods e.g butter, liver, eggs and oily fish.

The body should be able to convert betacarotene in orange/green/ yellow vegetables to vitamin A but often this doesn't happen efficiently enough.

I read recently that up to 50% of women have a genetic variation that makes this conversion difficult.

Anyone low in zinc (which is most diabetics!) is also unable to convert.

Researchers have found that insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas contain vitamin A receptors, and that blocking them reduces insulin secretion.

Kedgeree recipe.

I eat a lot of smoked mackerel salad at lunchtime in the summer but just can't fancy salad on a day like today.

This is a quick and easy warm alternative especially if you have some rice already cooked.

Smoked mackerel is high in Omega 3s helping fight inflammation and boost circulation and brain function. The peas and parsley give a dose of greens and a final k**b of butter makes it extra yummy.

Half an onion chopped
1/2 tsp cumin seeds and or fennel seeds
1/4 tsp turmeric
handful of frozen peas
one medium smoked mackerel fillet cut into chunks
half a cup of cooked rice
Lots of chopped fresh parsley
K**b of butter

Fry the onion and seeds in a little olive oil. Add the turmeric, stir well then add peas and mackerel.

Finally stir in the rice and mix well as it heats through. Stir in the butter and parsley just before serving.

Overactive bladder. Not much talked about but very common.

So are there any nutritional connections was the question I was asking this morning. The answer is a big yes.

1. Vitamin D very strong link between urinary problems and low levels of vitamin D.

2. Magnesium, particularly if you experience spasms in the bladder.

3. B12, another common deficiency especially if you take omeprazole or other remedies for reflux.

4. Zinc, a vital nutrient and one I test all my clients for.

5. Vitamin C. Strong supplements can make things worse but a good levels from food and drinks can be helpful.

Can also be aggravated by medications so talk to your GP or pharmacist.

About me...

Having started life as an Engineer I was inspired to study nutrition after a change of diet helped me to recover from Crohn's Disease. I trained at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition under Patrick Holford and graduated with distinction in 1997. Since then I have run busy practises in The Midlands and Devon. I like to work with clients in a practical and supportive way. I'm not a fan of restrictive or puritanical eating habits. I simply aim to provide workable solutions to health problems by focusing on good food and simple supplements.
