This quote from a boy in a Year 3 class might not help me sell Natter Matters, but it did make me laugh.

Empathy, thinking, questioning, listening, sharing, connecting, disagreeing politely- these are skills to be nurtured and worth making a priority. And sometimes you’ve got to miss a few assemblies!

Please tag every teacher, TA, school leader and children’s organisation you know- I offer an education discount because I am so proud of these packs and I know from the feedback I get that they work. I want them in every classroom. You can find them on my website where’s there’s also a form for discounts.

This goes out particularly to the good people of Gorton and Denton ahead of the by-election. Something to pop in your window to make it clear where you stand. Not a Party Political poster, but a clear statement of beliefs about the qualities you see and want to see in our country.

I originally made this design as a response to all the limp Union and St George flags that appeared across the UK last year. Every flag illustrated on this poster represents at least 40,000 UK residents. These are our neighbours, our friends, our colleagues, people that make up the glorious and welcome diversity of our society.

I’ve since had A3 posters made and now, also, postcard bundles. You can still download a printable version too, from my ko-fi page.

We can choose division, but it doesn’t make us safer or happier or better off. Only community and connection can do that.

What do I think about this?… and…. Why do I think that?

We are information rich and analysis poor. You can ‘find things out’ so much more quickly than when I was growing up, but the skills of
source-checking,
identifying biases and
examining information from multiple perspectives
don’t seem to have caught up.

We have to practise a skill to get good at it. I’m not saying Natter Matters is your one and only tool for addressing the problem, but it’s a bloody good start! An easy habit to get into, just talking and exploring big ideas in a safe and manageable way.

When you’re used to asking questions and talking about deep subjects, you are better equipped to think critically when faced with potential propaganda or misinformation. We can’t rely on systems or leaders to save us, we have to save ourselves!

We can’t just stand by. What’s happening in America (and also in Iran, in Gaza, in Sudan…) is a flexing of absolute, lawless power and every other country should be standing up for those innocent citizens.
The heat of international scrutiny, condemnation and sanctions should be blazing.

I just worry that instead of taking action, our leaders are taking notes.

A little true story of how we are better when we work together and how I just think we can keep expanding that notion rather than placing artificial boundaries in our way.

George Orwell published 1984 in 1949. It’s not original to point out how clairvoyant his work seems in the light of the last decade or so but it’s hard not to see everything that’s happening across the world and particularly in Trump’s America and not have this quotation go round and round your head:

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

To see civilians gunned down in food queues and be told they’re terrorists; women’s bodies policed and be told it’s to protect children and citizens murdered by the state and be told it was self defence.

I hope all the people who have suddenly woken up to the horror of what ICE are doing also enlighten themselves about what our governments are complicit in at home and abroad. They’ve normalised this stuff and we have to stand against it. Go and watch Minneapolis’ mayor, speech. We need clear, unequivocal opposition to fascism just like this.

2025 was a great year for Natter Matters. Being featured on and ‘s Parenting Hell Podcast meant reaching thousands more people, many of whom decided to take their natter to the next level. I still get orders from that shoutout 10 months on! Can’t thank them enough for choosing to champion small businesses.

I was thrilled to take the chat to in the autumn where wonderful conversations and question suggestions led to the new pack: Natter Matters- Who Are You? (and how do you know?)

My amazingly talented friend .steve and his step-granddaughter made this fabulous song to celebrate it and I may have made squealing noises of delight when they sent it to me. Isn’t it brilliant?

If you haven’t got your hands on the new pack, or want to stock up on any of the sets, I’ve extended the multi buy deal into January.

New Year’s resolutions are almost always complete cack, but talking more is easy to stick to and yields incredible benefits: connection, empathy, understanding and a chance to move beyond the everyday small talk and see a bigger picture.
