Dr Tamara Griffiths, President of the British Association of Dermatologists said: “Behind every urgent cancer referral is a person facing weeks of anxiety waiting for a consultation or a diagnosis. What’s more, every unnecessary referral means other patients may end up waiting longer to access care.”

Something has got to give, which is why our new report on diagnostic AI in dermatology makes a range of recommendations to maximise the potential benefit of this technology, which could transform services.

We need stronger regulation, better data, and training as AI diagnostics get introduced into mainstream use.

Are you fully informed on the credentials of your current foot-care provider? 📜

Do you understand the difference been Podiatrist, Chiropodist, Foot Health Pracrictioner and Foot Care Assistant and what that can mean about the care they can provide ? 🧐

All of the above have different levels of training. Scope of practice and knowledge between these titles will differ.

This week I assessed a new patient previously under a company that provides foot-care at what may appear a reasonable fee. I was informed that the lady was very lovely but had not undertaken any official training aside from shadowing and had worked in a nursing home ❌

She was unable to recognise a pre ulcerative lesion nor did she advise it was checked out by appropriately qualified professional. This is not an isolated incident unfortunately. This delay in appropriate treatment can have disastrous consequences particularly for the high risk foot 🚑

Don’t forget to protect the feet by applying SPF 30 or above if wearing 🩴

Sunny weather is forecast for most of the UK this weekend. If you are planning on spending time in the sun, remember these simple sun protection tips:

⛱️ Make use of the shade between 11am and 3pm
🕶️ Wear clothes that offer another layer of protection (sun hats, sunglasses, shirts and dresses with sleeves)
☀️ Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapplying it regularly
