😴 Sleep and Massage: Is There a Connection?
It might seem obvious to you and me that the answer is yes, but your client may not always make the link between the two.
How many times has a client come back to you and said, “Wow, I slept so well that night after the massage, best sleep I’ve had in ages,” wearing a big smile on their face?
We know that massage supports rest, relaxation, and recovery. But what’s going on beneath the surface?
Poor sleep can lead to increased production of cortisol, a stress hormone that not only slows down both mental and physical recovery, but also suppresses the immune system. You can see how this might negatively impact a person as a whole.
So if I’m working with a client who is living with or recovering from an illness like cancer, I’m especially keen to support them in getting the best possible sleep to aid their healing process.
Here are a few simple suggestions you can share with your clients:
➡️ Establish a nightly routine: Encourage a consistent bedtime ritual. Repeating the same steps each night helps signal to the body that it’s time to wind down, promoting the release of hormones that prepare the body for deeper, more restful sleep.
➡️ Nutritional support: Sometimes the body doesn't have enough of what it needs to fully relax. While I’m not a nutritionist, I often suggest speaking with a healthcare professional about supplements like magnesium and zinc, which are known to help reduce cortisol and support muscle and nervous system relaxation.
➡️ Stay hydrated throughout the day: Good hydration can reduce stress responses in the body. While drinking lots of water right before bed might lead to nighttime awakenings, staying well-hydrated during the day can support better overall sleep quality.
Improved sleep can be one of the hidden gifts of massage therapy. By helping clients make this connection, we can support them in creating habits that nourish body, mind, and spirit, long after they leave the treatment room.
