On Friday my team, alongside members of Martyn Day MP, Fiona Hyslop MSP and Michael Matheson MSP’s teams, undertook First Aid training through Safe Hands First Aid Training Ltd

The training covered several important areas, including CPR, recovery position, burns, bandages, bleeding and anaphylaxis. Victoria is a fantastic, accredited trainer who makes the course content engaging and memorable.

The training was held at Laurieston Bowling Club. They are the only free-to-hire venue in the village capable of hosting over 100 guests, and for social event bookings are one of the few in the local area with an extensive beer garden.

A huge thank you again to Victoria at Safe Hands Training and Laurieston Bowling Club for the use of their facilities.

With these extreme high temperatures it’s especially important to stay hydrated. Make your own rehydration solution using 1L of drinking water (or cooled, boiled water) and add 6 tsp sugar/sweetener, 1/2 tsp salt plus 50ml lemon juice. Try also substituting half the water for coconut water.

Look out for signs of heat exhaustion - headache, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, excess sweating, cramps in limbs or stomach, nausea, no appetite, excessive thirst, faster breathing or pulse, temp over 38 degrees. Kids can become drowsy and floppy.

If you suspect heat exhaustion - lay down in the shade, give/take frequent sips or fluid or rehydration solution, remove excess clothing and allow natural cooling. DO NOT sponge infants down with tepid water as they could become hypothermic.

If the person becomes dry and flushed and stops being able to sweat, you will need to call 999 and cool them rapidly by whatever means possible.

Take precautions if you’re out in the sun - make sure you have access to shade, wear a hat and sunglasses, keep your fluids up, avoid alcohol.

Remember sunburn is a radiation burn and the first aid response is the same as for any other burn - cool for at least 20 minutes under cool RUNNING water, avoid using oils, fats, lotions and potions. Seek medical attention if needed (larger than their hand, blistering, signs of heat stroke etc). Sunburn in the young and the elderly should always be checked out just in case. Once cooled you could apply a burn dressing or clingfilm to minimise risk of infection.
