🚨 BREAKING: Suspected Botulism Cases Linked to Botox in County Durham
Fourteen people have suffered adverse reactions after receiving Botox-style cosmetic treatments in County Durham, with ten requiring hospital treatment for suspected botulism.

⚠️ Symptoms reported include drooping eyelids, slurred speech, facial weakness, and difficulty swallowing.
🧬 The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating but says no evidence currently suggests the product was contaminated.

County Durham’s Director of Public Health, Amanda Healy, has urged anyone showing symptoms after recent treatment to call NHS 111 or go to A&E immediately.

📌 Patients are being warned to ensure aesthetic practitioners are qualified and follow proper hygiene and consent procedures.

If you received a 'vampire facial' (PRP treatment) at Olivia's Aesthetics Wolverhampton, the UKHSA is recommending FREE, confidential blood tests. This is a precautionary measure due to concerns identified by UKHSA, City of Wolverhampton Council regarding equipment cleaning.

Even though the risk is low, identifying undiagnosed infections early is crucial. Please contact the UKHSA West Midlands Health Protection Team on 0344 225 3561 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm, until July 4, 2025) or email WMRegion@ukhsa.gov.uk to arrange your test.

The JCCP would remind everyone performing or receiving procedures involving taking blood of the risks involved.

As of 1 June 2025, nursing and midwifery prescribers must consult in-person before prescribing non-surgical cosmetic medicines – including certain anti-wrinkle injections and aesthetic emergency kit items.

This change follows extensive public research and stakeholder engagement and brings us in line with other healthcare regulators.

It aims to improve safety, reduce risks, and maintain confidence in the professions.
