INGROWING TOENAILS
A common problem where the nail curves and grows into the toe. They are very painful and are at risk of becoming infected.
It can happen to any toe but usually the big toe.
They will not heal by themselves - you may need help from a foot specialist to carefully cut away the problem part of the nail.
The main causes of an ingrown nail are Ill fitting shoes, injury or badly cut nails.
The symptoms are often a swollen, red painful toe- may have pus.
Involuted nails are where the shape of the nail is excessively curved. They don't always cause pain but do curve into your toe and not into the flesh or pierce into the skin. Cut them carefully to avoid them turning into an ingrown nail.
The following recommendations of self treatment are from the NHS.
1.Soak your foot in warm, salty water to help soften the skin around your toe and reduce the chances of infection.
2.Keep your foot dry for the rest of the day.
3.Wear wide, comfortable shoes or sandals.
4.Take paracetamol.
