Anxiety is a bit like that neighbour who shows up unannounced — always at the worst time, with no real sense of boundaries.
You can ask politely. You can ask… less politely.
Still — there it is.

It can be waking up at 3am, going over a conversation from four years ago.
Freezing in the supermarket because you just can’t today.
Racing thoughts.
Heart beating out of your chest.
That sick, uneasy feeling.
Or sometimes it’s quieter — that steady voice that never quite leaves.

What we do know is this: your body thinks there’s a threat.
And the good news is, we can start to retrain that.

Not by arguing with it (that usually makes it louder), but by getting curious… almost like inviting that neighbour in and asking why they keep popping round.

Individual counselling is your space.
Not a space where you have to have it all sorted. Not a space where you need the “right” words. Just a space where you can be real.

It might be anxiety. Low self-esteem. Grief. Relationship struggles. Or just a quiet sense that something isn’t quite right, even if you can’t fully explain it.

Wherever you are, we start there — gently, and at your pace.

You don’t need to come with solutions. That’s not your job here. My role is to offer a steady, genuine space where you can begin to make sense of things, in your own way.
Because often, it’s not about fixing yourself — it’s about understanding yourself a little more.

And with the right conditions — empathy, patience, and feeling truly heard — things can start to shift.

Hope is a funny thing.
In counselling, people often arrive feeling like hope has packed its bags, left no forwarding address, and possibly taken the good biscuits with it. And honestly? That makes sense. When life gets difficult, hope doesn’t always feel like a glowing light at the end of the tunnel — sometimes it’s more like a flickering bulb you keep meaning to replace.
But hope doesn’t have to be big, bold, or inspirational to count. It can be quiet. Practical. Slightly sarcastic, even.
Hope can sound like: “I’ll just get through today.” “I’ll reply to that one email.” “I’ll get out of bed… eventually.” “I’ll try again, but I’m not happy about it.”
That still counts.
In therapy, we don’t expect you to show up full of optimism and life quotes. Showing up at all is already a small act of hope — even if it feels more like reluctance with good attendance.
So if hope feels distant right now, that’s okay. You don’t need to chase it down or force it into existence. Sometimes, we just sit with where you are… and gently make space for it to find its way back.

Your first session with me? Think of it as a little taster — not a life-or-death therapy marathon.
It’s free, just 30 minutes, and a space to start figuring out what working together might feel like. We can see if I’m the right counsellor for you — no pressure, no heavy stuff unless you want to.
You might want to say a bit about why you’re here… or not. You might have questions — I can try to answer them.

It’s not about getting it right or knowing where to begin. Sometimes, it’s just about starting somewhere.

It’s big, and maybe a little scary. But me? Not scary at all, let's just chat.
If you are thinking about starting, you are welcome to get in touch.

So… you’ve found a counsellor and booked that first session.
They ask, “Do you have any questions?”
And suddenly your mind goes completely blank. Not a single thought — just birdsong and tumbleweed.
If that happens, you’re not alone.
Here are a few things you might want to ask (if your brain decides to cooperate):
1. How do you work?
Their approach (or “modality”) shapes what sessions will feel like. It’s okay to ask what that actually looks like, and whether it feels right for you.
2. Are you part of a professional body?
This means they follow a code of ethics — something you can usually look up if you’re curious.
3. Do you have supervision?
Counsellors have their own support too. Supervision is a confidential space where they reflect on their work, helping them support you safely and thoughtfully.
4. What if I don’t know what to say?
A very real concern. Your counsellor can help guide things — you don’t have to carry the conversation on your own.
And if you ask none of these? That’s okay too.
You’re allowed to just show up, feel a bit unsure, and take it one step at a time.

Humanistic counselling… sounds a bit formal, doesn’t it? But what does it actually mean?
At its heart, it’s quite simple.
It’s about you being met as a whole person — not a problem to fix, not a label, not a list of symptoms. Just you.
It means having a space where you can talk freely, without judgement, and be accepted as you are. Where you’re not being told what to do, but supported to understand yourself in a deeper way.
Because the belief behind it is that you already have the capacity for growth and change. Sometimes it just gets buried under life, experiences, and everything you’ve had to carry.
My role isn’t to “fix” you — it’s to walk alongside you, offering empathy, honesty, and a space where you can reconnect with yourself.
No pressure. No pretending. Just a place to be real.

Sessions can be in person… or online — whichever feels right for you.
Some people like having a space to come to, somewhere separate from everything else. Others feel more comfortable at home, on the sofa, with a cup of tea and no commute.
There’s no “better” option — just what works best for you and your life.
We can work that out together.

So… who is Claire Wain Counselling?
Well — it’s me. Claire. The one looking fairly put-together in the profile photo… although, if I’m honest, I don’t always look quite that polished in real life. Think more “middle-aged, a bit warm, occasionally wondering what I walked into the room for.”
I’m many things: a mum, a daughter, a partner, a friend — and a counsellor. Very much part of that “sandwich generation” of women who finally get their kids to a place of independence… just as their parents begin to need them more. (No one really prepares you for that part, do they?)
And yes, navigating things like menopause along the way — which, let’s be honest, can feel like a whole experience in itself. Some of this might sound familiar to you, or it might not. Because while this is part of my story, yours will be completely your own.
What I want you to know is this: I’m not perfect — none of us are — and that’s exactly what makes us human. Counsellors aren’t people who have it all figured out. We’re people who’ve done our own work, learned to sit with the messy bits, and can sit alongside you while you do the same.
You are the expert in you. You know, deep down, what hurts, what helps, and what doesn’t. Sometimes, you just need the right space — and someone with you — to gently figure it all out.
That’s what I offer. A place to sit, to talk, to be heard… just as you are.
