with all this talk of major change needed within education for children with education needs I thought I would share how my autistic daughter feels about support within school"

" Sometimes the most powerful insights come from those living the experience. These heartfelt suggestions come from a 12-year-old who wants teachers, schools, and classmates to understand what really helps autistic children thrive in education and this comes from my very clever child.

1. Understanding, Not Judgement
Autistic children often think and feel differently. Taking time to understand rather than judge makes a huge difference and it’s important that a child should never be forced to stand out as this is overwhelming. Picking a child from their class or taking them out of class causes stress as it makes a child feel different and this often causes high levels of anxiety. I believe those who have experienced education in an autistic world are best equipped to make change; as someone with dyslexia, I empathise with others on a similar journey.

2. Clear Instructions
Demonstrate tasks to children, using clear instructions and simple language. Children may mask confusion and struggle quietly if your request is unclear. Don’t think a child is feeling fine and make sure your read information that is passed by other professionals, never assume a child should go into a class of 30 as you feel they look fine as this is a bad assumption and could lead to school avoidance. Think flexi school as burn out is real.

3. Quiet Spaces
Noise and crowds can be overwhelming. A calm, quiet space helps children manage overwhelming feelings and return to learning. The space should be large, have windows, and adult support, since anxiety is difficult to face alone. Children should not stand outside classrooms, as leaving class takes courage and returning under scrutiny can be traumatic.

4. Routine and Predictability
Knowing what’s coming next helps reduce anxiety. Visual timetables or daily schedules can make school feel more manageable and secure and make sure parents have these resources. inform families if change is happening as children need consistency and teachers changing or new seating plans are overwhelming. Never think it’s a good idea to change a child’s classroom without friends, understand friendships are challenging and need support and assistance through observation.

5. Sensory Considerations
bright lights, loud noises, or strong smells can be distracting or painful. Small changes—like softer lighting or noise-cancelling headphones can make a big difference and make these available within school setting.

6. Time to Process
Autistic children may need extra time to think, respond, or complete tasks. Giving that time shows respect and understanding and is so important and again give them space to do this.

7. Acceptance and Friendship
Being included and accepted for who they are helps autistic children feel valued. Promoting kindness and inclusion among classmates creates a stronger, more compassionate community. School assemblies should educate students that SEN is not simply a disability, but can be a superpower, and introduce them to successful autistic individuals around the world who are amazingly successful.

The biggest thing is do not make and autistic child feel different as this causes major anxiety just make adaptions and time out schedules that allow children to feel safe.
Never make a child feel they are the problem as this kills confidence and self esteem and after all we are all unique and this needs to be celebrated.
