"Should I try CBT or EMDR?" — it's one of the most common questions we hear.

Both are evidence-based, both are recommended for anxiety and trauma, and both can create real, lasting change. So the answer isn't about which one is "better." It's about what's driving your symptoms.

CBT tends to work well when anxiety or low mood is kept going by unhelpful thinking patterns. It gives you structured tools to notice those patterns and challenge them, session by session.

EMDR tends to work well when your symptoms are rooted in specific memories or past events that keep showing up in the present. Rather than talking through those experiences in detail, it helps your brain process them differently.

One works with your thoughts. The other works with your memories. And sometimes the right path only becomes clear once we've had a proper conversation about your history.

And by then, the search for the right therapist can feel overwhelming. So many options, so few ways to tell who's actually good at this.

Before you book with anyone, look for a therapist who uses evidence-based approaches like Emotionally Focused Therapy, with published success rates you can actually verify. We're talking 70-80% of couples seeing real improvement, not vague promises.

Look for someone who doesn't just wait for crisis mode. A good couples therapist works with you when things are good too, strengthening what's already there before small cracks become big ones.
