Each week brings something new to clinic 🙌

I see many different people presenting with many different issues each week, which makes my job so interesting!

The above are just a few of the issues presented to me this particular week in May 🌼

I am highly trained to screen for anything more serious I cannot treat, in which case I will refer you to your GP or A&E if necessary 👍

I love the mountains! They are also a place where many injuries occur. If you are heading to the slopes this Winter, here are a few bits of advice to prevent the return journey in a suspension boot!

⛷ Many leg and knee injuries occur due to incorrectly adjusted ski bindings. It is really important to make sure your boots and bindings are properly calculated and fitted to the right settings.

🏂 Give accurate information on your age, ability, height and weight as these are critical in calculating the right settings for the bindings of your skis.

⛷ If your bindings are too tight and you fall, your skis will not detach and this can result in serious injuries. If your bindings are too loose your skis may fall off, which can also cause injury.

🏂 Make sure your boots are comfortable and fit well. Do not do them up too tight as you could find that your feet get very cold or lose sensation, which can contribute to further injuries.

⛷ Other tips - Try to avoid collisions, wear a helmet, watch out for black ice, frostbite and sunburn. For more detailed information, take a look at my blog on all things skiing safety.

Winter Solstice

The darkest day = the longest night

🌕Jupiter and a bright moon will shine together on the winter solstice, which occurs on December 21st-22nd in the Northern Hemisphere.

Healthy things to do this Winter Solstice✨

😴 Enjoy a deep sleep. Take advantage of this and plan for it to be a lovely night’s sleep. Make sure your sleeping environment is clear of stressors by making your room as dark as possible and leaving any devices out of the room.

🚶‍♀️Exercise. It’s dark when we leave for work and dark when we return home. It’s normal for exercise motivation to change without the light from the sun. You could try mixing up your exercise routine by going for a Winter walk or ice skating! This will increase the endorphins circulating in your body and boost your mood regardless of the sunlight.

🌙 Take time to appreciate your surroundings today. This is a busy time of year with lots going on for many people in many different ways, physically and emotionally. Today is a good day to reset amid the chaos. As you look forward to sunnier days, remember to enjoy the cosiness of the darker days too!

This week is migraine awareness week!

What is migraine?

It is a genetic condition, but environment often plays a significant role in symptom development.

Symptoms often include headache, nausea, light and sound sensitivity, as well as dizziness and visual changes (to name a few).

It is also possible to experience symptoms of a migraine...without a headache!

A multi-disciplinary approach to managing migraine is key to helping those experiencing migraine.

How can osteopathy help?

We can't cure migraine but we are here to help alleviate some of the tensions caused by an attack.

Treatment can help migraine by targeting the musculoskeletal system and associated structures to relieve pain and reduce intensity in future attacks.

Osteopaths may use techniques including manual therapy, gentle exercises and relaxation techniques to help with posture, neck and shoulder mobility and overall muscle tension which are often contributing factors to migraines.

Additionally osteopaths can help to identify and address triggers, provide education on lifestyle modifications and offer advice on stress management techniques, all of which can have a positive impact on reducing migraine frequency and intensity.
