"COPPER HISTORY INSIGHTS
The Statue of Liberty was built out of copper to light the way to freedom.
Copper does eventually oxidize to form copper oxide, or verdigris, which is a green color. This oxidation is the reason the Statue of Liberty is green rather than reddish-orange.
It contains 31 tons of Copper, which is equivalent to:
- 2 and a half cruise ship anchors
- 5 elephants
- 8 hippopotamus
- 3 and a half Tyrannosaurus Rex
- 410.000 29 Ore Slices
(that’s a lot of Copper!!!)
It took nine years to build the Statue of Liberty in France, with construction ending in 1885. Then, it had to be disassembled and shipped to New York City. Once it arrived in America and its pedestal was ready, it took four months to rebuild the statue.
The structure of the statues was built by the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel and completes 147 years on October 28.
