Skin cream alert:

Here is some advice on how to use emollients safely:

Emollients can soak into clothing, bedding, dressings, and other fabric. The build-up of dried emollient on to fabrics can increase the risk of fires as they can catch fire much more quickly and burn hotter than clean fabric and cause severe and fatal burns. This applies to all emollients, whether they contain paraffin or not.

1. Do not smoke, cook or go near to any naked flames or heat sources such as gas, halogen, electric bar or open fires whilst wearing clothing or dressings that have been in contact with emollient-treated skin.

2. Change and wash your clothes frequently (preferably daily).

3. Take care the cream doesn’t dry onto cushions, soft furnishings and bedding.

4. Tell your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you normally smoke. They will be able to offer you help and advice to stop smoking.

5. Most emollients are oil based; if being used as a soap substitute there is a risk of slipping during in showers or baths. Ensure that the bath or shower is cleaned out properly after use to reduce the risk of slipping.

Know Your Numbers – get your blood pressure checked at your local community pharmacy.

Participating community pharmacies are offering free NHS blood pressure checks to adults aged 40 and over who don’t already have a diagnosis of high blood pressure.

The check takes 10–15 minutes in a private consultation room. A trained pharmacy team member will ask a few questions and take your blood pressure using a monitor.

If your reading is high, you may be offered a device to take home that monitors your blood pressure throughout the day (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring). Based on your results, the pharmacist may refer you to your GP for further support.

Why is this important?

High blood pressure (also called hypertension) often has no obvious symptoms, but it can significantly increase your risk of serious health problems like heart attacks and strokes. Knowing your numbers empowers you to take control of your health and make informed choices that improve long-term health outcomes.

Please share your views on accessing mental health services and support in Surrey and North East Hampshire.

Work is underway to better integrate the services, teams and organisations that provide mental health support within Surrey and North East Hampshire’s communities.

The aim is to make it easier for everyone to access the level of support they need, when they need it, without being repeatedly referred to multiple services and to proactively support people with complex needs.

Surrey Coalition of Disabled People and the Independent Mental Health Network are supporting the team behind this work by helping them understand the needs and views of people with lived experience, their families and carers.

You can help develop this new Integrated Neighbourhood way of working by sharing your views in a simple survey.

There are four questions about what you would like to see done differently, and how you access information, advice, and support with your mental health.

The survey is open to everyone, whether you have used mental health services or not, and it’s anonymous, so no-one will know who gave what answer.

The closing date is Thursday 28th August 2025.

The survey can be found here: https://forms.office.com/e/uxufCWrBkH

Do you know someone who missed their Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in school?

NHS England has launched a focused campaign
on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination
programme, specifically focusing on those who
missed it in years 8 and 9 at school.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus
spread through skin contact, usually during
sexual activity. Most HPV types are harmless,
but some are linked to an increased risk of
certain cancers, including cervical cancer and
can also cause ge***al warts. The HPV vaccine
helps protect against the types of HPV that can
cause most cervical cancers and ge***al warts.

This campaign will see all those aged 16 and
over who missed the vaccine being contacted by
letter, email, text and app to invite them to book
a vaccination at their GP surgery and catch up before they reach their 25th birthday.

Cervical Screening Awareness Week is running from 19 - 24 June and aims to highlight the importance of regular cervical screening for women’s health. As part of Cervical Screening Awareness Week, Heatherwood Hospital are running a walk-in cervical screening clinic on Monday, 23 June, from 9am - 4pm for women, and transgender or non-binary people with a cervix, aged 25 to 64 years who are due or overdue their cervical screening appointment.

Cervical screening (formerly known as the smear test) is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer, yet around 1 in 4 people don’t attend their appointment, often due to fear, embarrassment, or uncertainty.

Here is a video walking you through what happens at a smear appointment: https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/cervical-screening/what-happens/
