Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care

Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care Phyllis Tuckwell is the only adult hospice care service covering West Surrey and North East Hampshire

For over 40 years Phyllis Tuckwell has provided supportive and end of life care to patients and their families living with an advanced or terminal illness in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, serving 550,000 residents. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and their families in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham (In-Patient Unit, Day Groups, outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support) and the Beacon Centre in Guildford (Day Groups, Outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support). The NHS/Government usually only covers 20% of our costs, which means we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. All our services are free of charge to our patients and their families, but we need to raise over £25,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support.

Tea and talk at our Listening Lounge sessions.

Meeting and talking to others who have also experienced loss can help bereaved people feel that they’re not alone. We run monthly Listening Lounge sessions for bereaved people whose loved one died from an advanced or terminal illness, and everyone is welcome, regardless of how recently or long ago their loss was.

Each session follows a specific topic, to help people build confidence as they adjust to their new circumstances. Our next session, on 12th January, is entitled Making use of your Air Fryer, Batch Cooking & Freezing. It will take place from 1.30-3.30pm, at the Beacon Centre in Guildford. Spaces are limited to 12 people per session, so please call 01252 729440 or email pafs@pth.org.uk to book.

As Christmas draws ever closer, many of us are starting to wind down and enjoy the excitement of the season by spending precious time with family and friends. For others, this will be the last festive season they spend with their loved one.

The support that we provide will enable them to focus on treasuring this precious time together, whilst we manage the medical, nursing and therapeutic care their loved ones need. To ensure that our care is tailored to each patient’s individual needs, our team will learn about them, who their family and friends are, if they have any pets, what they enjoy doing, all the important details that shape their lives and make them who they are.

Can you help us this Christmas by making a donation to our Christmas Appeal?

Enabling patients to spend their last days at home.

Our Hospice at Home team provides care, advice and reassurance to patients and families at home, enabling them to focus on spending special, quality time together. “Stephanie died peacefully at home,” said her husband, Jim. “It was extremely important to us that she was able to stay at home. She had always said she wanted to die at home, and Phyllis Tuckwell made it possible for her to stay at home right to the end.”

You can read Jim’s story of how we supported him and Stephanie here: https://ow.ly/nakq50XG9JX

Living Well gets festive!

Our patients and carers are enjoying getting into the Christmas spirit at our Living Well sessions. Patients have made Christmas puddings at our Confidence with Cooking sessions, and Yuletide wreaths at our Therapy through Nature group. Carers have been welcomed at our drop-in support sessions and coffee afternoons, and our Beacon Centre itself is looking very festive!

We would like to reiterate our thanks to everyone involved in the Santa Fun Run on Sunday, it was a great event at a brand new location that everyone loved.

We have a number of big THANK YOUs to say, so we would like to say a huge thank you to all of the following people and teams, in no particular order....

The event was organised by our team in partnership with the Rotary Club of Hart and with the fantastic support of the Elvetham Heath Parish Council.

All of the brilliant volunteers who gave their time on the day (and some in the lead up too) to help make this possible!

The fabulous Blackwater Valley Runners helped us all along the way, with help planning and setting up the route, then putting out and collecting in the signs, some of the team took part and others were marshals - what a wonderful team!

Paul Fitchett from PaulFitchettImages.com took the great photos, some of which are attached here, he took many more, which you can find by clicking on the link at the end of these messages. If you would like a copy of any of the photos please contact us at Phyllis Tuckwell as 100% of the donations for photos come to us.

The brilliant Paul Brennan who did the warm up, and then took part himself!

The VOX choir who sang beautifully as people were signing in and then again when people were finishing their runs or walks.

We had the most amazing support from both NTT and Vale Furnishers, who not only both sponsored this event, but also had teams taking part too! Both companies are fantastic supporters of Phyllis Tuckwell and we are very grateful for their continued support.

All of the people who took part, it was so fantastic to see you all out there in your sea of red, and the great support from your families and friends, and the local people who came out to cheer the participants on.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Caring for you at home this Christmas

Our Hospice at Home team will be visiting patients over Christmas, bringing them care, support and reassurance, and enabling them to spend this special time of year in their own homes, with their loved ones. We provide our care every day of the year, and Christmas is no exception. Knowing that our specialist team are there for them reassures patients and carers. “They took the burden off us and put us at ease, so we were then able to be relaxed around Mum and make sure she didn’t get stressed,” said Sue, whose mum Joyce we cared for at home.
