Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care

Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care Phyllis Tuckwell is the only adult hospice care service covering West Surrey and North East Hampshire

For over 40 years Phyllis Tuckwell has provided supportive and end of life care to patients and their families living with an advanced or terminal illness in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, serving 550,000 residents. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and their families in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham (In-Patient Unit, Day Groups, outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support) and the Beacon Centre in Guildford (Day Groups, Outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support). The NHS/Government usually only covers 20% of our costs, which means we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. All our services are free of charge to our patients and their families, but we need to raise over £25,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support.

James’s friend Ben was only 29 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

“Ben always wanted kids,” said James. “His son Benji was his whole life. If he'd had to have his final weeks at home, it would have been a very difficult situation. I can't even think what would have happened if Phyllis Tuckwell hadn’t been able to take Ben. He stayed on the In-Patient Unit for his last weeks, and they gave him round the clock care.”

James decided to fundraise for us, to show his support for the care we gave Ben. After hitting his target of running 300km over the month of June, he is now running another 10km for every extra £10 donated, and has raised an amazing £3,480! You can read his full story here: https://ow.ly/oZCw50Xb2Nf

We hosted our very own Bake & Brew event last week!

It was a great success and so much fun. We loved being able to bring our teams together for some wonderful cakes and showcase some hidden baking talent.

We all had a great time and already can't wait for the next one. Can you join the fun and support us too by hosting your own event? Sign up to host your own event, we'd love to hear from you.

It’s Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) Day!

Our AHPs include occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, speech and language therapists - and art therapist Kara.

Art therapy offers a supportive space where patients can explore and express feelings around their illness in a gentle and meaningful way. It helps patients explore complex feelings that might be hard to put into words, such as fear, loss, frustration, change or hope. They can pause and reconnect with themselves, unwind, and find a sense of ease and release.

“We use soft pastels, watercolour paints, clay and collage,” said Kara. “I might ask patients what an image or colour expresses for them, or whether there any feelings that need space, and they can use those questions as prompts to create something symbolic and personal.”

Inclusivity means ensuring that every patient and carer feels truly listened to, every staff member feels supported, every volunteer feels valued, and our community continues to grow in unity and compassion.

Here, our chief executive, Sarah, explains why Black History Month, and the opportunity it offers us to learn, is important to us.

Our care extends further than you think!

We support patients to manage symptoms such as pain, fatigue or breathlessness, through medication, complementary therapies, and physiotherapy or occupational therapy sessions. We also help those who need practical support or equipment at home, to enable them to continue doing the things that are important to them.

Our care doesn’t stop with our patients, though! We also support their families and carers, through social and information sessions, individual and group counselling, complementary therapies, and pastoral care. We work with local schools too, to help them support bereaved students.

Hospice Care is much more than you think!

We’d like to wish all six of our Royal Parks Half Marathon runners the very best of luck for tomorrow’s event!

You’ve all trained and fundraised so hard, and we are so grateful for your incredible efforts.

Four of the team are from our very own Therapy Team, Milla, Julia, Sam and Tori, and we’re so proud of them! Best of luck also to Maddie and Vinai, who complete this fantastic team.
We’ll be cheering you all on every step of the way!
