Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care

Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care Phyllis Tuckwell is the only adult hospice care service covering West Surrey and North East Hampshire

For over 40 years Phyllis Tuckwell has provided supportive and end of life care to patients and their families living with an advanced or terminal illness in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, serving 550,000 residents. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and their families in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham (In-Patient Unit, Day Groups, outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support) and the Beacon Centre in Guildford (Day Groups, Outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support). The NHS/Government usually only covers 20% of our costs, which means we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. All our services are free of charge to our patients and their families, but we need to raise over £25,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support.

Dignity and respect are at the heart of our organisation.

They guide the way we support our patients and their loved ones, and how we treat each another. When Joyce, who spent her last days at home, was visited by our nursing team, they cared for her with kindness and respect.
“They changed her nightie and brushed her hair, and spoke to her the whole time,” said her daughter, Julie.
“Mum wasn't really with it, but they gave her that dignity. They were chatting to her, saying let’s comb your hair, or what lipstick do you like? When I walked in, I remember saying, oh Mum, you look beautiful!”

You can read Joyce's story on our website: https://ow.ly/ZNft50Y5tuv

Stories that speak from the heart

Telling your story is a powerful way to connect with people, through sharing your thoughts, feelings and experiences. Some of our patients and their loved ones have kindly shared their stories of how our care has helped them.

They explain which of our team cared for them and how that care impacted their lives. These stories also illustrate the breadth of our services, which not everyone is aware of. You can read them on our website. https://ow.ly/M96l50Y63h6

In case you missed it!

Last night, ITV Meridian News included a feature on our volunteer recruitment. One of our patients, Caroline, spoke about how valuable our volunteer drivers are to her, and two of our volunteer drivers spoke about why they volunteer for us.

You can watch the feature here: https://ow.ly/gYsi50Y4p91

We’re currently recruiting more volunteers for when we return to the new Hospice in the spring, and retail volunteers to help in our shops across West Surrey and North-East Hampshire.

A while ago our Community Fundraising Manager, Charli, took on a skydive, and as you can see, she had the time of her life!

After checking in and having her training, this is what happened on the day:

1. Walking to the plane
2. On the plane chatting to her instructor
3. Leaving the plane
4. Free falling
5. Slower descent, taking in the amazing views
6. Landing
7. Thumbs up after ‘the most amazing experience’

We have 3 skydive days every year, if you’d like to find out more or sign up please go to our website:
