Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care

Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care Phyllis Tuckwell is the only adult hospice care service covering West Surrey and North East Hampshire

For over 40 years Phyllis Tuckwell has provided supportive and end of life care to patients and their families living with an advanced or terminal illness in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, serving 550,000 residents. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and their families in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham (In-Patient Unit, Day Groups, outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support) and the Beacon Centre in Guildford (Day Groups, Outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support). The NHS/Government usually only covers 20% of our costs, which means we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. All our services are free of charge to our patients and their families, but we need to raise over £25,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support.

A fundraising walk to help support our care

A huge thank you to Don, who has raised over £4,000 for us through a sponsored walk along the length of the Thames Path. Don has motor neurone disease (MND) and is being cared for by our doctors, nurses, therapists, counsellors and MND specialist. “I've been quite overwhelmed with the support I've been getting,” he said. “It's incredible.”

Relaxing therapies help restore balance

When patients and carers are stressed, anxious or in pain, our soothing complementary therapies can help. These gentle treatments, such as massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, Indian head massage and reiki, can relieve pain, nausea, circulation problems and fluid retention.

They can also ease insomnia, depression and anxiety, and create a feeling of wellbeing and peace.

“Terry was getting aches and pains,” said his friend Gary. “The complementary therapists gave him massages on his back, his arms, his legs. He would always say how brilliant it was, how it had done him the world of good.”

Support with nutrition and hydration

Living with an advanced or terminal illness can impact the amount people eat and drink, and they might need support from our dietitians, Claire and Nicola.

“Because of their illness, treatment side-effects and medications, patients may not feel as hungry or thirsty as usual,” said Claire.

“They might feel sick, have diarrhoea or constipation, be experiencing changes in the way things taste, or have a dry or sore mouth which hurts when they eat. By advising them on different foods and drinks to try, modified textures, and nutritional supplements, we can help ensure they get the nutrition and hydration they need.”
