We talk about "resistance training" all the time these days but what do we actually mean. It doesn't have to be heavy barbells, sweaty gyms or bodybuilder physic lifting colossal weights. The reality is much simpler - and much more relevant to women’s health than most realise. Resistance training simply means working your muscles against some form of resistance!

Menopause is not just symptoms. Symptoms are the early signs that our hormones levels are changing, but when symptoms resolve, that does not mean the effects of low oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone stop.

There are ongoing, profound, initially symptom-free effects on our brain, cardiovascular system, bones, muscles, and metabolic system that need our attention.

It's not about getting through it or riding out the symptoms.......its so much more!

You aren't imagining it I'm afraid! As our hormone levels change this affects our joints and they just hurt more, feel more stiff and generally just make life a little harder 😫

Oestrogen is an incredibly powerful anti-inflammatory that helps our joints work effectively, so when levels decline the body initially finds the loss hard. With no reins on the inflammatory system, pain and stiffness prevail

But all is not lost 👉 find out how you can combat the effects of declining hormones in my latest blog (link in bio 💻)

Why do joints hurt during perimenopause?

1️⃣ Reduced joint lubrication - Oestrogen helps regulate the fluid within joints, lower level of oestrogen lead to reduced fluid and less lubrication
2️⃣ Changes in connective tissue and ligaments
Oestrogen helps collagen synthesis, without it the ligaments become stiff and inflexible
3️⃣ Increased sensitivity to pain and inflammation
Oestrogen is a powerful anti-inflammatory, therefore more pain with even minor injuries
4️⃣ Decreased muscle support
Muscle mass disappears, meaning less support for our bones and joints

💡 The good news? There are ways to manage and prevent discomfort. Resistance training is the foundation, plus physical therapy to keep you moving!

In recent years, v@ginal probiotics have certainly risen in popularity, but are they worth it?

They claim to help prevent vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis and thrush, but is this evident in the research.

The v@ginal microbiome should be dominated by lactobacillus, which create an acidic environment, so creating a hostile environment for other bacteria. But sometimes this balance can be disrupted, giving rise to more infections.

Unfortunately there just isn't enough research into v@ginal probiotics to determine whether they help. Also, the industry is unregulated, so there's no guarantee of the products you are buying. This doesn't mean they don't work, just that we don't yet know.

So instead of starting with these probiotics, it might worth trying other lifestyle changes that have been proven to work, such as using a menstrual cup, or eating fermented foods.
