Recovery can test you physically, mentally and emotionally. If you need motivation to keep going with your rehab, Liz’s journey from hip fracture to marathon runner is proof that progress is possible.

"I came to Kesson following a fracture of my hip which required a lengthy rehab programme. I had been treated by the team before & knew they would be able to help me get through a very challenging time both physically & mentally.

I was a keen runner, cyclist & hockey player & all that stopped instantly. Life became hopping around on crutches with endless rehab & this went on for 22 months before I had a fully healed hip. But in this time with the great support and expertise of the team, I learnt a lot- how to pick myself up after a big injury that impacted & changed how I lived my life. Kesson's holistic approach taught me patience, resilience, strength & what you can do when faced with pain, hardship & loss & they gave me the tools to get on with rebuilding my body.

The support I had from the team, my friends & family, inspires me to keep going. I think of what I went through to get to where I am now & I feel SO lucky. I'm back to running marathons- completing Berlin, Chicago & New York & I'm celebrating my 10th by running London 2026 for charity, I'm back playing the sports I love too. If I have any advice, it would be to invest in maintenance & keep moving. For me running & sport inspires & motivates me, keeps me sane & brings me such joy & community and without it I wouldn't be the person I am today.

“Is it too late if I finished cancer treatment years ago?”

It is never too late to get stronger.

Whether you finished treatment months ago or many years ago, strength, balance, and confidence can still improve.

Earlier is helpful - yes.
But meaningful change is possible at any stage.

Many people tell us the biggest shift isn’t physical at first.

It’s the moment they realise:
👉 “I can trust my body again.”

And that matters.

How often should someone with cancer exercise?

More isn’t always better.

Most evidence supports:
✔️ Strength training 2–3 times per week
✔️ Light aerobic movement like walking in between

What matters most isn’t intensity, it’s consistency.

Small, regular sessions done safely will always outperform doing too much, too soon.

Sustainable progress > perfect plans.

“What if I have weak bones or osteoporosis?”

Weak bones don’t mean you should avoid strength training.

In fact, strength training is one of the most effective ways to support bone health.

Loads are introduced carefully. Progression is slow and considered. Movements are chosen to stimulate bone strength without unnecessary risk.

Avoiding movement can actually make bones weaker over time.

Strong bones aren’t built through rest. They’re built through safe, progressive loading.

We’re proud to be partnering with , a unique programme combining academic study with a dedicated golf development pathway.

This week, Luke, Dave and Meg delivered a bespoke functional strength & conditioning session for the Academy boys, designed specifically to improve their performance on the golf course. 💪⛳

Every movement had a purpose, building strength, stability and mobility to help them generate more power, prevent injury and ultimately play better golf.

But this partnership is about more than performance. Through our sponsorship, students benefit from reduced costs, playing kits and access to professional physiotherapy support, helping to make golf more accessible for everyone.

At Kesson, we believe in empowering people to Move Better, Live Better. And every time someone chooses to Heal, Move or Improve with us, it enables us to reinvest back into community initiatives like this.

Care doesn’t stop at the clinic door. It extends onto the course, into the classroom, and across our community.

We’re genuinely proud to be part of their journey.

“Will exercise make my pain or neuropathy worse?”

Pain, nerve changes, lymphoedema, these fears stop many people from moving at all.

But when strength training is properly adapted and supervised, it does not make these symptoms worse. In many cases, it helps.

Progressive strength work can:

- Reduce pain

- Improve balance and stability

- Help people feel safer in their bodies again

The goal isn’t to ignore symptoms.
It’s to work with them, carefully, thoughtfully, and respectfully.

You are not fragile.
You just need the right approach.

Huge congratulations to John Barnes, one of our Faversham patients, who completed the UTMB Arc of Attrition, a brutal 100-mile ultra-run in Cornwall.

Battling Storm Ingrid, John faced gales, heavy rain, sleet, and relentless mud along the South West Coastal Path and still crossed the finish line. Incredible.

John has worked with Physio Charlie for several years and is on a monthly membership. Even more impressive?
He was back at work on Monday.

Special shout-out too to Sally and her husband Nigel, who volunteered as Arc Angels.

“I’ve never exercised before. Is this even for me?”

If you’ve never exercised before, you’re not behind.
You’re exactly where you need to be.

Many people start strength training for the first time in their lives after a cancer diagnosis.

There’s no expectation to be fit.
No pressure to keep up.
No judgement.

Everything starts at your level and progresses gradually, because confidence matters just as much as strength.

🌱 Everyone starts somewhere. And starting gently is still starting.

“What if I’m just too tired?”

Cancer-related fatigue is real.
It’s deep, persistent, and unlike normal tiredness.

And here’s the part that surprises many people:
👉 Rest alone rarely fixes it.

Gentle, well-chosen movement is one of the most effective ways we have to manage cancer-related fatigue. Not intense workouts. Not pushing through. Just appropriate movement, adjusted to how you’re feeling that day.

Many people tell us they don’t feel more exhausted after exercise. They feel clearer, steadier, and more capable.

You don’t need more willpower.
You need the right support.

“Lifting weights during chemotherapy?”

Exercising during chemotherapy can sound shocking at first.

Many people assume chemo means rest, stillness, and waiting it out.
But research - and lived experience - tells a different story.

For many people, appropriately prescribed strength training during chemotherapy can:

- Reduce fatigue

- Improve physical resilience

- Help people tolerate treatment better

The key is flexibility. Some days you do more. Some days you do less.
And that’s not failure, that’s good care.

✨ Strength training adapts to you, not the other way around.

Is it actually safe to do strength training during cancer treatment?”

The answer, for most people, is yes, when it’s done properly.

Strength training during cancer treatment isn’t about pushing through or ignoring symptoms. It’s about individualised movement, adjusted to your diagnosis, treatment phase, bone health, and how you feel day to day.

Safety doesn’t come from avoiding movement.
It comes from the right movement, at the right time, with the right support.

💙 You deserve care that protects you, and helps you move forward.
