An article filling me with hope and optimism this morning.🥰
Inflammation has been identified as the root cause of most if not all chronic illness and disease.
In order to reduce our levels of inflammation we can address contributors from our external and internal environment through lifestyle (exercise, sleep, stress management/mindfulness/meditation, relationships/connection, purpose/spirituality) and our diet (eating foods that heal us: nutrient dense, whole foods, avoiding foods that harm us: toxins and chemicals, allergens, refined carbs and sugars. And this practise has been advocated by The Limes Clinic for a number of years to help patients stuck in a chronic state of pain and dysfunction.
More recently we have come to realise that the vagus nerve (a nerve signalling between brain to body and body to brain) actually helps to modulate and control inflammation. And there are many things we can do to improve the function of the vagus nerve (vagal tone): cold water exposure, chanting, gargling, meditation, singing, deep breathing, movement such as yoga.
But this article highlights the use of bio electronics to stimulate the vagus nerve. Studies so far show promising results in reducing inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in particular.
These are implanted devices, but there are also now affordable external devices on the market.
I’ll be trying this out over the next month or two and will feedback any results!
