When it comes to trauma, therapies that engage the body/mind in rhythmic movements and sounds can offer greater healing than talk therapies. The acient art of drumming is very soothing on body and brain as this illustration shows..

Group work with Children and Young People operates in a similar way to One to One Counselling/ Therapy.
The Therapist provides a similar function; helping the client to work through their emotions with a Reflective 'Adult Therapist', in this way the client learns to process and understand their emotional experience and to contain their own feelings.

Within Groups we create a safe, trusting environment, firstly through a 'Group contract' , with myself modelling this behaviour through; Rogers core conditions of; Empathy, congruence and respect.
Exploring different ways for the students to express their feelings through; Writing, drawing, music, drama, Group discussions/activities/games.

I find music and Art very strong mediums for Emotional expression, as it taps in to creativity.
However every individual is different, and some participants mainly like to talk!

Within the 4 years experience of running group work with Children & Y/P
The most important factor in the effectiveness of the work I witness is that; Individuals are accompanied with 'like minded peers' , which can dispell thoughts/feelings of being 'Different', affirming individuals that they are not 'alone' or 'weird'

Issues can be looked at and shared within the safe environment created.
Raising Confidence/self esteem, reducing Anxiety.
Looking at possible interventions where needed, giving Children & Young people the oppertunity to learn directly about their individual needs, gaining strength and resilience, which may serve our children & Young People for life.
