Left the Forces and feeling lost? You’re not alone and there’s nothing wrong with you!
Veterans often face invisible struggles after service. Here’s why and how veteran specific counselling with Chris Paling can help.
I’m Chris, Addictions Counsellor at Wintern House and Ex Royal Navy.
Coming out of service is a shift most people can’t understand unless they’ve done it.
The change is sudden, but what it brings up comes in waves: identity, purpose, silence.
I know this because I’ve lived it, and I’ve collaborated with veterans for over 20 years who’ve struggled in the same ways.
The Invisible Shift
You take off the uniform, but the mindset stays. Hyper-awareness, emotional control, always being switched on.
In service, which kept you sharp. Out here, it can leave you feeling disconnected. Relationships become hard to navigate. Crowds can feel unsafe. Quiet moments get filled with noise. Add to that the feeling that you’re meant to just “get on with it” and you’ve got a recipe for isolation.
I know what it’s like when the orders stop. No Sergeant. No structure. No mission. Just silence and the expectation that you’ll somehow figure out ‘normal life’ on your own.
For years, we lived by routine, and daily orders:
Wake up and turn to
Get the detail
Follow orders
Push through
Then suddenly you’re in civvy street with no playbook, no chain of command, and no idea what comes next.
You’ve just spent years in a completely different world.
And it makes perfect sense if you’re struggling with:
Isolation and a lack of direction
PTSD, anger, or emotional overwhelm
Alcohol or drug use to cope
Problem gambling
Trouble finding work or even getting out of bed
But it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Here’s what helps:
Build a new routine, even if it’s just getting up, showered, and moving
Set small, realistic goals. they add up
Stay connected. isolation is the enemy
Learn how civvy life works (no shame in that)
Reach out, not just for help, but for direction
The truth is: you still have the skills, discipline, and grit but life outside the wire needs a different strategy.
I collaborate with veterans like you to help make sense of that shift.
Talking things through, finding focus again, grounded support led by someone who’s walked that path.
Let’s talk. Let’s move forward. Together.
