I am thrilled to announce my new music therapy practice in Paphos, Cyprus, at The Learning Refuge, starting on the 23rd of April.
I’d like to think I am a patient, kind therapist with an outgoing personality. In 2016, I qualified as the UK's first blind music therapist. As a blind person myself, I can appreciate some of the complexities that people with differing disabilities and illnesses sometimes feel.
has been an established profession helping people with differing disabilities and illnesses to express themselves through music to promote their emotional, social, and psychological well-being.
For example, if they have lost their voice through their , they can't talk to each other like you and I can. So, through the use of different percussion instruments, they are able to express how they feel. For example, they might be feeling happy or sad, but they can't express this in words, so music can help them explore a range of different emotions.
For those people who have some language/speech, we help them through songwriting to write songs about the frustrations in their lives (it could be people's perceptions of their disability or illness, for example).
In my sessions with people living with , I often use music and images to access memories. For example, sharing an Elvis Presley song and looking at images from the 1950s will often provoke memories and conversations that are both enjoyable and helpful. In this way, music can help us to remember who we are and to reconnect us with loved ones.
I offer Individual and small Group music therapy sessions for children and adults.
